Extreme, but short-lived, X-ray sources in young stellar populations can inject significant mechanical feedback into their local star--forming environments, and may even play a crucial role in clearing out the interstellar medium, allowing ionizing radiation to escape galaxies. Understanding these sources and the stellar populations that host them is an essential piece of accurately modeling star formation across cosmic history. The goal of this proposal is to take full advantage of an extraordinarily highly magnified X-ray emitting dwarf starburst galaxy to study the connection between star-formation, stellar populations, and HMXBs at Cosmic Noon. Doing so requires precision measurements of the continuum emission spanning the rest-frame optical spanning the 4000 angstrom break in this galaxy. Our proposed observations will allow us to constrain the rest-frame optical properties of the stellar populations in this galaxy. We will measure the stellar populations of two spatially resolved UV-bright star-forming clumps (one X-ray bright and one not) in a distant (z=1.52) strongly lensed X-ray emitting star-forming galaxy. This small program would, for the first time, extend our ability to perform spatially resolved studies of the X-ray emission from star-forming stellar populations beyond the local universe, out to Cosmic Noon. The purpose of these observations is to obtain photometry in for WFC3/IR bands (F098M, F125W, F140W, and F160W) of the field containing a strongly lensed dwarf star-forming galaxy at z=1.52 that has an X-ray detection in existing Chandra data. The four WFC3/IR bands be combined with existing optical detections (ACS/WFC F475W and F775W data) to measure the spectral energy distribution between rest-frame ~1700-6700 angstroms for 1) the total integrated light from lensed galaxy, and 2) for individual, spatially resolved (due to the high lensing magnification) star-forming regions-one with the X-ray emission, one without-in the lensed galaxy. We will use the WFC3/IR photometry to constrain the properties of the stellar populations in the X-ray emitting dwarf galaxy as a whole (as it would be observed in a typical deep field survey), and of the individual star-forming clumps within the galaxy. The observations are designed primarily to yield good signal-to-noise detections of the individual star-forming clumps in each band. Following the scheduling instructions for Cycle 27, we have split the for orbits in this program into two separate visits of 2 orbits each. We have designed the two visits to be identical, so that each visit will, on its own, provide four dithered images (for good PSF reconstruction) in each of the four bands. This design ensures scientifically useful data even in the event that only one of the visits executes successfully. Members of this proposal team have extensive expertise using strong lensing to study the properties of highly magnified galaxies across the entire observable electromagnetic spectrum. PI Dr. M. Bayliss is an expert on multi-wavelength studies of star formation, gravitational lensing, and galaxy clusters. He has worked with imaging and spectroscopic data from the X-ray to the near infrared, and is an experienced user of Hubble, Chandra, and numerous 6-10m class ground based telescopes. Recent work includes a published HST + Chandra study of the X-ray emitting giant arc that is the focus of this proposal. Dr. Bayliss has led 4 HST observing programs, all studies of highly magnified strong lensing systems, and will serve as the overall project lead. All CoIs below will also contribute to some or all of: data reduction, analysis, and paper-writing. Prof. Michael Gladders is a galaxy cluster and strong lensing expert, with extensive experience in data handling and analysis (spectroscopic and photometric) and a publication record of currently 196 refereed papers. He has built two instruments for the Magellan telescopes, and is an active user of many of the world's largest telescopes, and HST. His research group at the University of Chicago is focused on exploiting emerging galaxy cluster and strong lensing samples to answer questions about galaxy and structure formation and evolution. Dr. Emil Rivera-Thorsen has extensive experience with spectroscopic analysis of ISM properties in star-forming galaxies, both at low and intermediate redshifts. He has performed extensive work on the Sunburst arc over the last two years, both in rest-frame UV and optical spectroscopy and imaging, and has led two papers about the galaxy. Dr. Hakon Dahle is an expert on strong and weak gravitational lensing of galaxy clusters and analysis of ground- and space-based optical imaging and spectroscopic data of both galaxy cluster lenses and lensed sources (both galaxies and quasars), including HST data. He has published 91 refereed publications so far. He has headed the team at the University of Oslo taking the lead in the characterization of the rest frame UV properties of the Sunburst Arc. Dr. Sharon leads the lensing analysis of several ongoing lensing survey. Sharon and her research group, including Remolina Gonzalez and Mahler, have ample experience in lens modeling and analysis of cluster lenses of all scales (including Frontier Fields, Johnson et al. 2014, Remolina Gonzalez et al. 2018; RELICS, Cerny et al. 2018, Paterno-Mahler et al. 2018; and SGAS, Sharon et al. 2019) Dr. Mahler is an expert in strong lensing with ample experience in modeling the HFF clusters (Mahler et al. 2018) is part of the LENSTOOL development team, and is an expert in MUSE IFU spectroscopy analysis. Dr. Chisholm is an expert in UV observations of star-forming galaxies, especially techniques to determine the stellar population properties from the observed restframe ultraviolet spectral observations. These quantities determine the ionizing properties that will be analyzed by the proposed observations. Dr. K. Whitaker is an expert on galaxy evolution and fitting/modeling of galaxy SEDs and and their stellar populations. Dr. M. McDonald is an expert in X-ray astrophysics and the properties of massive galaxy clusters. Dr. S. Allen is an expert on X-ray observations of galaxy clusters, and galaxy cluster cosmology. Dr. J. Rigby is an expert on galaxy formation and evolution. Dr. M. Florian has experience reducing more than 110 orbits of HST imaging data on lensing clusters, and is an expert at photometric and morphological analyses of strongly lensed galaxies.
