Most of these galaxies have Lyman-alpha equivalent widths incompatible with a neutral intergalactic medium (IGM), and they cluster in small region of the survey, pointing to an ionized bubble in the IGM which allows LyA to escape. All five can be observed in a single imaging field of WFC3-IR. We here request 6 orbits of HST mid-cycle time to (1) reliably measure continuum fluxes and equivalent widths (2) look for fainter, non-LyA emitting neighbors and achieve a more complete census of ionizing photons in this region, and (3) study the sizes of redshift 7 galaxies both in starlight and in Lyman alpha light. Midcyle observations will best enable the results to inform timely JWST observations of the epoch of reionization.
This combination of wide field searches for such bubbles, as indicated by LyA galaxies, followed by deep observations with Hubble, is uniquely powerful. It provides huge synergy to study both the progress of reionization in this crucial, central phase, and also the nature of the galaxies that drive this change.Six orbits to do three filters. One field. A bit of dithering.The team proposing this survey consists of members of the Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reioization (LAGER) survey. LAGER has as its core a narrowband survey using the 4m Blanco telescope at Cerro Tololo, complemented by spectroscopic followup observations (predominantly at Las Campanas Observatory), and hopefully also by this HST followup proposal. LAGER is a multinational collaboration, with robust groups of investigators in the USA, China, and Chile.
Specific expertise of the investigators on this proposal:
James Rhoads is an expert on the population properties of Lyman alpha galaxies,
on Lyman alpha based tests of cosmological reionization, and on wide-field narrowband surveys.
Sangeeta Malhotra is the PI of the US side of the LAGER survey. She pioneered reionization tests using Lyman alpha galaxies, starting with Malhotra & Rhoads 2004. She also has a long standing interest in the physical properties of Lyman alpha galaxies, and recently has been investigating the physical properties of their low redshift analogs.
Zhenya Zheng is on the astronomy faculty at Shanghai Astronomical Observatory. He is a leader in the LAGER project, having led the bandpass design for the narrowband filter and published project's first scientific results, on the lumiosity function of redshift 7 Lyman alpha galaxies.
Junxian Wang is a professor at the Univeristy of Science and Technology of China. He works extensively on both Lyman alpha galaxies and active galactic nuclei, and is the PI of the Chinese portion of the LAGER project.
Leopoldo (Polo) Infante is the PI of the Chilean portion of the LAGER project, and the Director of Las Campanas Observatory. He is an expert on high redshift galaxies.
L. Felipe Barrientos: is a member of the Chilean LAGER team. His areas of interest include galaxy clusters, stellar populations, gravitataional lensing, and gaseous halos of galaxies, groups, and clusters at high redshift.
Weida Hu is a graduate student working with Dr. Wang, an active member of the LAGER project with interests in observations and data reduction, and the lead author of a forthcoming paper on the second LAGER deep field.
Chunyan Jiang is a researcher at Shanghai Astronomical Observatory. She works on Lyman alpha galaxies at both intermediate and high redshifts.
Alistair Walker is the NOAO project scientist for the Dark Energy Camera, and a member of the LAGER team. He helped design the LAGER narrowband filter and provides expertise in matters relating to instrumental performance.
Isak Wold is a postdoctoral fellow at NASA GSFC.
