However, absorption by the interstellar medium (ISM) has so far prevented the observation of transits in the Lyman-alpha core. Near the Lyman-alpha core, photons are plentiful and transits are deep. Capitalizing on the recent discoveries of TESS, it is now possible to push past this limitation. We have identified 2 planets confirmed since the last regular HST cycle in systems with radial velocities that shift the host star's Lyman-alpha line away from ISM absorption. These systems provide the potential to characterize the Lyman-alpha transits of planets smaller than Neptune and observe material escaping at velocities below 30 km/s for the first time. Doing so would enable previously infeasible tests of outflow models. It would also provide insight into the role of hydrodynamic escape in shaping the sub-Neptune planet population. Lyman-alpha reconnaissance of these 2 systems is the prudent first step toward these goals. Reconnaissance will eliminate key unknowns regarding the host star's intrinsic Lyman-alpha flux and the column depth of the intervening ISM. At the same time, this program will check for signs of deep Lyman-alpha transits. Doing so will enable informed planning of follow up observations to characterize the Lyman-alpha transits of the highest priority targets during the next regular HST cycle. We will allocate two HST orbits per target for a total of 4. For each target, one exposure will be made roughly 15 h prior to transit, with another following near mid-transit. We will observe these systems using STIS with the G140M grating and 1222 CENWAVE setting, a configuration used for previous successful Lya transit observations (e.g., Kulow et al. 2014). R. O. Parke Loyd has extensive experience in the reduction and analysis of HST data, with five first-author papers published using such data since 2014, including one analyzing the UV transit observations of the evaporating warm Neptune GJ 436 (Loyd et al. 2016). Dr. Loyd also contributed to the analysis of the data leading to the discovery of that planet's giant H cloud (Kulow et al. 2104). Dr. Loyd will carry out data reduction for the program. Drs. Evgenya Shkolnik and Adam Schneider also have experience with HST program, namely in the planning and execution of the treasury-scale HAZMAT program (14783, PI Shkolnik). They are experts in observations of low mass stars and stellar kinematics. Drs. Shkolnik and Schneider will primarily play advisory roles for the program. Dr. Adam Schneider created the Lya-Teff relationship used for this proposal and is currently administering a program gathering observations of high-RV tragets for improved Lya reconstructions. Drs. James Owen and Ruth Murray-Clay are experts in modeling exoplanetary escape (e.g., Owen and Alvarez, 2016; Murray-Clay et al., 2009). Dr. Owen modeled the atmospheric escape of the planets for which we propose observations and is responsible for an early prediction of the exoplanet radius gap (Owen and Wu, 2013). John McCann is a PhD student working with Dr. Murray-Clay and recently published work on 3D modeling of planetary outflows, from which a figure in this proposal originates. Dr. Owen, Dr. Murray-Clay, and John McCann will use the observations to test and constrain outflow models. Dr. Courtney Dressing is an expert in characterizing exoplanets found through transit surveys (e.g., Dressing et al. 2019). Steven Giacalone is a graduate student working with Dr. Dressing and recently created the TRICERATOPS software for evaluting the false positive probability of TESS objects of interest (Giacalone and Dressing, 2020).
