Based on the handful of studies to date (e.g. Beta Pictoris b, HR8799 bcde, 2M1207B, 51 Eri b), it is clear that the interpretation of future observational data relies on a thorough understanding of complex atmospheric phenomena. Directly-imaged exoplanets such as HR8799 bcde and Beta Pic b are too close to their host star to enable in-depth, time resolved atmospheric characterization, but wide orbit planetary-mass companions can be studied with current facilities in exceptional detail. We propose to obtain HST/WFC3 spectroscopic variability monitoring of a young, newly discovered companion at the planet/brown dwarf boundary to shed light on the atmospheres of young L-type objects. The proposed observations will reveal the atmospheric structures and phenomena as well as the spin axis alignment of the system to test formation mechanism. This program consists of 6 consecutive, uninterrupted WFC3 G141 observations of a wide planetary-mass companion to a star. PI Dr. Johanna Vos is an expert in brown dwarf variability studies using both ground-based and space-based observatories (Vos et al. 2018, 2019, 2020). Dr Vos is PI of HST Program 15924. Dr Vos will lead the data reduction and analysis of the observations. Dr. Jacqueline K. Faherty is an expert in brown dwarf characterization studies. She is a co-founder of the citizen science project called Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, a CatWISE team member. Mark Popinchalk is a PhD student who studies gyrochronology with space missions including TESS, advised by Dr Faherty. Mark will lead the analysis of the K0 primary star. Dr. Marc Kuchner is the PI of the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project, a project that is critical to the discovery and characterization of cold objects including the one in this proposal Dr. J. Davy Kirkpatrick is a member of the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project and a world leader in the discovery and characterization of brown dwarfs. Dr. Adam Schneider is an expert in characterizing the lowest-temperature brown dwarfs with HST (Schneider et al. 2015, 2016) and is a co-founder of the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project. Dr. Aaron Meisner is a CatWISE team member and Backyard Worlds co-founder. Prof. Adam J. Burgasser is an expert in brown dwarfs and characterizing their atmospheres. He contributed critical data for the characterization of the object targeted in this proposal. Dr. Eileen Gonzales is an expert in characterizing complex cloud structures in directly-imaged exoplanets through spectral retrieval techniques. Jorg Herakles is a citizen scientist with the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project, and discoverer of the object targeted in this proposal. Prof. Beth Biller is a world expert in direct-imaging of exoplants and variability monitoring. She is PI of HST Programs 14188, 12873 and 15628, and led a paper on HST/WFC3 variability monitoring of a planetary-mass brown dwarf (Biller et al. 2018). Dr. Jonathan Gagne is an expert in brown dwarf characterization with a strong focus on the impact a changing surface gravity has on a given object. Dr. Daniella Bardalez Gagliuffi is a member of the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project and an expert in the formation and evolution of brown dwarf binaries. Afra Ashraf is an undergraduate student working with Dr Bardalez Gagliuffi on predicting brown dwarf variability using single-shot spectra.
