The bright object tool reported potential violations for visits 3, 4, and 5. These are all because GSCII does not have spectral type information for the science target, so it assumes the worst case of an O5. ETC runs confirm no violations using simulated spectra of the science targets based on their known effective temperatures and activity levels.

----- Attempting Submission 3 (Sun Apr 17 19:11:30 GMT 2022) -----Leveraging High Radial Velocities to Get to the Core of Planetary Lyman-alpha TransitsLyman-alpha transit observations of warm, gas-rich exoplanets enable the study of active atmospheric loss. However, obscuration of the inner +/-30 km/s of the Lyman-alpha core by the interstellar medium (ISM) severs a key link between the velocities at which planetary outflows are observed and the ~10 km/s velocity at which they initially depart the planet. Systems with high radial velocities (RVs) can circumvent this limitation by Doppler-shifting the Lyman-alpha core away from ISM absorption. We propose Lyman-alpha line core transit observations of HD 136352 c, a transiting warm sub-Neptune orbiting a nearby solar analog. HD 136352 c is presently uniquely suited to these observations. However, because of the diagnostic power of transit observations in the Lyman-alpha line core, we also include a Lyman-alpha survey of 5 additional high RV targets hosting warm, gas-rich planets to confirm Lyman-alpha core visibility in an expected 1-3 systems. These Lyman-alpha transit observations of HD 136352 c and, in future cycles, the 1-3 systems found to have exposed line cores will provide an observational link between material accelerated beyond the 30 km/s limit and its source at the planet. This will provide new constraints on the interactions between planetary outflows and their circumstellar environments, ultimately improving model-dependent mass loss estimates and providing insight into the impact of hydrodynamic atmospheric loss on the evolution of planetary populations.The observing plan is straightforward. All observations will utilize the G140M/1222 configuration.
Five targets will receive single-orbit Lyman-alpha reconnaissance. These observations have no time constraints.
For the remaining target, the Lya transit of planet c will be observed with 7 orbits. Two initial orbits scheduled a day ahead of the transit visit will provide a trustworthy out of transit baseline followed by a five orbit visit centered on the transit.Dr. R. O. Parke Loyd has extensive experience in the reduction and analysis of HST data, with five first-author papers published using such data since 2014, including one analyzing the UV transit observations of the evaporating warm Neptune GJ 436 (Loyd et al. 2016). Dr. Loyd also contributed to the analysis of the data leading to the discovery of that planet's giant H cloud (Kulow et al. 2104). Dr. Loyd will carry out data reduction for the program.
Drs. Evgenya Shkolnik and Adam Schneider also have experience with HST programs, namely in the planning and execution of the treasury-scale HAZMAT program (14783, PI Shkolnik). They are experts in observations of low mass stars and stellar kinematics. Drs. Shkolnik and Schneider will primarily play advisory roles for the program. Dr. Adam Schneider created the Lya-Teff relationship used for this proposal and is currently administering a program gathering observations of high-RV tragets for improved Lya reconstructions.
Dr. David Ardila is an expert in UV instrumentation and observations and will play an advisory role on the project.
Drs. James Owen and Ruth Murray-Clay are experts in modeling exoplanetary escape (e.g., Owen and Alvarez, 2016; Murray-Clay et al., 2009). Dr. Owen modeled the atmospheric escape of the planets for which we propose observations and is responsible for an early prediction of the exoplanet radius gap (Owen and Wu, 2013). Dr. Owen, Dr. Murray-Clay, and their students will use these and follow on observations to test and constrain outflow models.
Dr. Sarah Peacock and Dr. Travis Barman are experts in the PHOENIX code. Dr. Peacock has previously computed several realistic synthetic spectra for cool stars that reproduce HST/COS and STIS spectra (e.g. Peacock et al. 2019a,b). Dr. Peacock will use the observations to compute SEDs of each target star, including the unobservable EUV wavelengths.
Dr. Courtney Dressing is an expert in characterizing exoplanets found through transit surveys (e.g., Dressing et al. 2019). Steven Giacalone is a graduate student working with Dr. Dressing and recently created the TRICERATOPS software for evaluting the false positive probability of TESS objects of interest (Giacalone and Dressing, 2020) and which enabled the validation of two of the objects in this work (Giacalone et al., 2021).
Dr. Sam Quinn leads spectroscopic host star characterization efforts for TESS. He has compiled lists of systemic RVs that are essential to identifying systems promising for this work.
Dr. Natalie Batalha, Dr. Ian Crossfield, and Dr. Aarynn Carter are heavily invovled in spectroscopic follow up efforts for RV confirmation of TESS targets. Students Nicholas Scarsdale and Joseph Murphy are responsible for as yet unpublished RV confirmations of the TOI-509 b and TOI-469 b systems.
