WLM has an oxygen abundance that is 13% of solar, and the structure of the molecular clouds at these low metallicities is fundamentally different from those found in higher metallicity spirals such as the Milky Way. Recent analysis of star forming regions with CO cores within WLM raised questions about the role of these cores in the overall star forming event in these regions. The proposed HST observations from 0.275 to 1.6 microns will allow (1) measurements of the age and extinction toward massive stars that have formed in the star-forming regions, (2) calculation of the ionized gas mass in the star-forming regions, (3) constraint of the cloud boundaries, (4) identification of YSOs that are forming in the CO cores and determination of their evolutionary stage, (5) mapping of the extinction as a tracer of the gas within the star-forming regions, and (6) placement of the CO cores in the context of the gas and dust. This is crucial for our understanding of the role of the small CO cores in low metallicity star-forming regions. Imaging in multiple UV--near-IR filters with WFC3/UVIS and WFC3/IR of two pointings, each of (3+2)-orbit duration, within local dwarf galaxy WLM to cover the area surveyed with both ALMA in CO(2-1) and Spitzer/IRAC. All visits should be executed at the same ORIENT of PA_V3 = 45.0 +/- 1.0 deg to ensure none of the ALMA-detected CO cores falls outside the combined WFC3/UVIS field of view. This program can be executed also in 2-gyro mode with minimal loss of image quality and science, since we split the 5 orbits of observations for each mosaic pointing over 3+2 orbits, and most of the individual exposures are shorter than 600 s (maximum exposure duration is 800 s). Our team has pioneered the mapping of CO clouds at very low metallicity with observations of WLM (13% solar abundance) first with APEX and then with ALMA. We also obtained Herschel [CII] observations of the photo-dissociation region in one of the star-forming regions targetted in this proposal to complete the image of the structure of the cloud. P.I. Haylee Archer is an astronomy graduate student doing her Ph.D. dissertation with Deidre Hunter and Rogier Windhorst on clouds and star formation in WLM. Dr. Deidre Hunter is PI of LITTLE THINGS, a multi-wavelength project aimed at understanding how dwarf irregular galaxies form stars. Dr. Bruce Elmegreen is an expert on theorectial aspects of star formation and has recently studied populations of embedded star clusters in nearby spirals. Dr. Rolf Jansen has extensive expertise with HST WFC3/UVIS and ACS/WFC imaging programs, and star formation in nearby galaxies. Dr. Rogier Windhorst has been working on and with HST since 1986. He has been Interdisciplinary Scientist for JWST since 2002. He has extensive experience with studies of galaxies from radio through far-UV. Dr. Leslie Hunt's focus on observational studies of the star formation properties and processes in galaxies includes considerable experience with infrared observations. Dr. Phil Cigan has experience with far-infrared observations of PDRs and dust. Dr. Monica Rubio has a long history of pioneer observations and analysis of molecular clouds and YSOs in galaxies, particularly the Magellanic Clouds.
