The two "super-apertures" centered on the star clusters: NGC 6791 and NGC 6819 - each containing several thousands stars - have been monitored almost continuously for over 4 yrs. If their stellar populations could be disentangled, then these Kepler datasets would be of groundbreaking importance to assess planet occurrence rates in two uniquely large groups of homogeneous and coeval stars. We propose to obtain high-resolution HST images within these two super-aperture fields and use a well tested method (already proved successful) to combine Kepler lightcurves with HST source information. The unmatched HST image quality will provide a homogeneous, complete, and color-complete input list which will enable extracting Kepler light curves of all the objects. Furthermore, HST allows us to obtain proper motions linked to the Gaia system and membership for all these stars. The combined data will provide about 25,000 lightcurves - increasing the total Kepler sample by 15%! Based on the latest planet occurrence rates we expect to find over 70 transiting planets -- ~40 in the solar-metallicity NGC 6819, and about 30-50 in the super-solar metallicity NGC 6791. Our program will greatly enhance the Kepler mission's yield, boost the number of known transiting planets, and will allow a direct test of the planet occurrence rate-metallicity relationship in uniquely homogeneous and well-characterized samples. The proposed data will also enable many other investigations, enhancing the legacy and the scientific impact of both the HST and the Kepler missions, and target selections for future JWST and ARIEL follow-ups. This is first epoch of a multi-epoch astrometri and photometric proposal. The targets are two open clusters, and on each a mosaic of 2x2 ACSWFC fields will be collected. As we will cover as much as possible of the FoV with both ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS it does not matter which is the primary of the two. Somehow, letting WFC3 as primary, allowed us to put more suitable images for our purposes. In the case of NGC 6819, we try to overlap as much as possible archival images from GO-11688 and GO-12669 as this will maximize proper motions useful for field-cluster separation. Dr. Bedin (PI, INAF-OAPD) will coordinate planning and data reduction, contribute to analysis, lead publication of results, and manage the overall program. Drs. Luigi R. Bedin and Mattia Libralato (STScI) have led the development and application of precision astrometric techniques with HST for low-temperature brown dwarfs: Bedin et al. 2017, MNRAS, 470, 1140; Bedin & Fontanive 2018, MNRAS, 481, 5339; Bedin & Fontanive 2020, MNARS, 494, 2068; Fontanive , Bedin & Bardalez Gagliuffi 2021. MNRAS, 501, 911; and stellar systems Libralato et al. 2016, MNRAS, 463, 1780. They will lead analysis to extract precision astrometric measurements, linking HST positions at the Gaia absolute system and transforming positions at the submas level in each Kepler image. Dr. Nardiello Domenico (LAM) has a recognized expertise in the extraction of high-precision light curves for stars in dense environments. He has developed an innovative light curve extractor that can be used both for ground-based (Nardiello+2015,2016) and space-based time series (e.g. Kepler/K2, TESS, Nardiello+2019,2020, Nardiello 2020, PATHOS project). Dr. Nardiello will also calibrate the HST photometry (Nardiello et al. 2018 MNRAS,481,3382) and carefully register the HST photometry to the Kepler photometric system. The new method to exploit Kepler data, which is proposed to be used in this programme, is based on PSF neighbor-subtraction and was specifically developed to exploit the huge potential offered by the Kepler and K2 super-apertures covering the cores of dense star clusters (SCs). The method was successfully demonstrated in the super-aperture regions containing the four SCs : NGC2158, M35, M44 and M67 which were observed for about 80 days during K2 Campaign 0 and 5. Discovered 9 transiting exo-planet candidates, which they are following-up at HARPS@TNG. Dr.s: Libralato, Bedin, and Nardiello have developed and published the method we are proposing to apply. They led multiple HST/WFC3/IR programs on brown dwarfs, which resulted in over 15 refereed publications. They have also led successful studies with ground- and space-based high-contrast imaging systems, including HST searches for small-separation companions around brown dwarfs. They will contribute to the scientific analysis and interpretation of this program, and will also contribute to the writing of papers. Dr. Gijs Mulders, is an expert in exoplanet occurrence rates and Kepler detection statistics. His will lend his expertise to this project to aid the statistical interpretation of the planet detections, and play major role in determining the planet occurrence rates in star clusters. Dr. Thomas Barclay is a research scientist with a decade of experience working on wide-field photometry from space using the Kepler and TESS spacecraft. He is experienced in exoplanet detection, modeling of exoplanet transits, and in vetting exoplanet candidates. He has led two prior HST/WFC3 proposals to study transiting exoplanets. He will contribute to the assessment of the veracity of planet candidates that are identified.
