Deep HST V- and I-band imaging has revealed an underlying population, and determined its distance through observations of cepheids and the tip of the red giant branch. It will soon be targeted by JWST/NIRCAM and MIRI to provide a complete census of evolved red stars and young stellar objects. However, deep imaging in the blue and ultraviolet which is where the young massive stars are the brightest and are best studied is lacking, which we here propose to remedy. By deep far UV to blue imaging in 4 filters a census of the hot star population in IZw18 and the extinction law at very low metallicity would be obtained. With the exquisite spatial resolution of HST and using the HeII 4686 narrow-band filter, we can, for the first time, identify what sources are responsible for the HeII emission including Wolf-Rayet stars, but also hard ionizing sources, such as rapid rotators, binary stripped stars, or accreting compact objects, and provide constraints on stellar evolutionary theories at low metallicity. The observations would also allow a much improved determination of the recent star formation history, and a chararacterisation of the luminous red stars that JWST will see. WFC3/UVIS observations: F438W: 2 visits with in total 5 (3+2) full orbit duration and dithred exposures with no flash. It uses the 5-point dither schemes described in Anderson (WFC3 2020-07). Should, if possible, be obtained within +/-1 month of the JWST-GTO (program 1233) currently scheduled between 22 Oct and 22 Dec 2022. The target is placed in UVIS2 for optimum blue/UV performance F336W: 2 visits with in total 5 (3+2) full orbit exposures with the same prescription and timing constraints as for F438W, but with flash=5 added to each exposure F225W: 2 visits with in total 5 (3+2) orbits with the same strategy as for F438W and F336W, but flash=8 F469N: 9 orbits wit full orbit exposures, split in three visits, emploing the 9-point dither scheme, as described in Anderson (WFC3 2020-07). Here flash=10. ACS/SBC observations: 4 orbits are dedicated to F140LP observations, split in two visits which should be separated in time with a few hours, during which the SBC high voltage was not turned on, to avoid heating up the SBC detector which would incur increased dark current. We tried first to set the orient constraints such that component C would also be included, but this turned out to be non-schedulable. Instead we focus on the main body and adopt no orient constraints in order to allow scheduling close in time with the other visits. In total, 4 exposures will be obtained, splits in 2 visits to mitigate dark current that builds up with time, and dithered to improve PSF sampling and to step over the bad anode. The SBC observations are deemed fully safe according to the BOT. The referenced ETC calculation assumes an UV AB magnitude of 17.3, fully safe and far brighter (abs mag -15) than any source known to be present in IZw18. The team include experts on metal-poor dwarf galaxies and stellar evolution. Prof. Goran Oestlin is an expert on metal-poor starburst galaxies, their stellar populations and kinematics. He is experienced with HST data analysis and has led 13 HST programs as PI, and has served on the STUC. Dr Olivia Jones is an expert on metal-poor stellar populations and PSF photometry of point-sources in crowded environments. Dr. Hirschauer is an STScI Prize Fellow who is an expert in extremely metal-poor, low-mass star-forming galaxies. He is specifically interested in the identification of dusty, evolved stars with infrared photometry, as well as the analysis and interpretation of emission-line spectra for determination of chemical abundances. Margaret Meixner, Director SOFIA Science Mission Operations Expertise: Meixner has experience with multi-wavelength observations at low metallicity from her work on the SAGE and HERITAGE surveys of the Magellanic Clouds.
