However, during this process, powerful outflows blast open low density cavities and NIR light shines out from the forming star, beamed as if from a lighthouse through turbulent storm clouds. This light carries crucial information that can guide us to a deeper understanding of massive star formation. We propose WFC3/IR observations of 10 high-luminosity protostars, selected to already have well-studied properties via MIR-FIR data. The sources, along with 5 others with archival HST images, form a sample to be analyzed uniformly with the following goals: 1) Characterize J & H band continuum emission from massive protostars, including faint, extended emission. Radiative transfer simulations show such NIR emission is mostly scattered light emerging from outflow cavities, thus enabling measurement of their structure, radiation fields & dust content; 2) Detect Pa-beta & [FeII] emission tracing shock- & photo-ionized regions, important diagnostics of the protostars and their outflows; 3) Search for low-mass stars that may be clustered around the massive protostars, as predicted in Competitive Accretion models, with the observations especially probing in the low extinction outflow cavities. WFC3/IR's sensitivity, angular resolution and field of view are essential for this study. The project allows a first exploration of correlations of outflow and cluster environment properties with basic protostellar parameters, e.g., mass, luminosity & evolutionary stage, and thus enables groundbreaking tests of massive star formation theories. This is very straight forward program. 10 visits, each of them of one orbit, each of them on one of 10 independent targets. For each orbit, the target is observed with WFC3/IR imaging in 4 filters. Dr. Ruben Fedriani is an expert in NIR observational studies, in particular in the study of high-mass star formation. He has led previous publications using HST data. Dr. Yao-Lun Yang is an expert on star formation, radiative transfer modelling, and infrared and radio observations. Dr. Morten Andersen is an expert on infrared imaging from the ground and space and has led studies of massive star forming regions both from the ground and with the HST. Dr. James De Buizer is an expert in massive star formation, is the lead author of the first SOMA paper, and has published several similar studies looking at the jets, outflows, and protocluster environments of massive young stellar objects in the infrared. Dr. Yichen Zhang has expertise in radiative transfer modelling and millimetre observations, and has worked on the complementary data of the SOMA targets. Dr. Jon Ramsey is an expert on the numerical modelling of protostellar outflows, including MHD, chemistry, and radiative transfer. He is also experienced at interpreting ALMA observations of outflows. Dr. Jan Staff is an expert on running MHD simulations of outflows from protostars. Dr. Kei Tanaka is an expert in theoretical modelling of massive star formation. Dr. Giuliana Cosentino's research activity aims to identify the role of large scale shock interactions in triggering star formation in molecular clouds. In particular, Dr. Cosentino's work is focused on shocks occurring in sites of cloud-cloud collisions and SNR-cloud interactions. Dr. Yu Cheng is an expert on radio observations of massive star formation. Prof. Jonathan Tan is PI of the SOMA Survey and has expertise in star formation studies. Dr. Viviana Rosero is an expert on radio observations and is the leader of the SOMA-radio survey. Dr. Prasanta Gorai is an expert in astrochemistry of massive star forming regions.
