We propose Chandra observation of DECALS J0542-2125, a candidate cluster merger at z=0.61. Two galaxy clusters of comparable mass are separated by < 500 km/s and 1 Mpc in projection. Additionally, one cluster gravitationally lenses a z=1.84 quasar, the largest-separation lensed quasar known. The proposed Chandra data will provide the necessary resolution to determine the morphology of the X-ray emitting gas and definitely determine the system's dynamical state. Joint Hubble Space Telescope observations will provide the necessary constraints for a robust lens model. Taken together, this program will map the distribution of dark matter, X-ray gas, and stars in DECALS J0542-2125. This program observes two strong lensing cores separated by ~150 arcsec, less than the ACS field of view. The 5-orbit program includes a combination of ACS and WFC3 observations across five visits. Each visit contains only a single orbit to maximize schedulability - particularly important because 4 of the 5 orbits have roll angle constraints as detailed in the Phase I proposal. Overall, the program aims to image both cores in F606W and F814W using ACS (single pointing with a particular small range of angles), both cores in F105W and F160W using WFC3-IR (separate pointings), and the primary lensing core (involving a wide-separation lensed quasar) for ~1.5 orbits in F390W. Visit 1 uses the ACS F606W filter. It employs an orientation constraint of 290-315 degrees to fit both lensing cores on the instrument at once. This visit includes 2068 s of F606W imaging. Visit 2 uses the ACS F814W filter. Likewise, it employs the same orientation constraint as Visit 1 to simultaneously image both lensing cores. This visit includes 2068 s of F814W imaging. Visit 3 uses the WFC3-IR F105W and WFC3-IR F160W filters to image the secondary lensing core. This visit includes 1011 s of F105W imaging and 1211 s of F160W imaging. Visit 4 uses the WFC3-IR F160W, F105W filters and the UVIS-F390W filter to image the primary lensing core, in 2 orbits. An orientation constraint of 25-65 degrees is employed to optimally sample the primary lensing core and region between the two lensing cores. The primary impact of reduced gyro operations for this program is the effect on the roll angle constraints, and the commensurate reductions in schedulability. Visits 1-2 have roll angle constraints so both lensing cores land on the instrument at once. If this was no longer schedulable, two separate pointings may have to be used to cover both cores. Visits 3 has a roll angle constraints to optimally sample the primary lensing core and the region between the two lensing cores. These roll angle constraints could be relaxed in the event of reduced gyro operations by prioritizing imaging of the primary lensing core. Finally, Visit 4 has no roll angle constraint and therefore would not be very affected by reduced gyro operations. Our collaboration has extensive experience with interpreting and modeling lensing clusters (e.g., Dahle et al. 2013, ApJ, 773, 146; Sharon et al. 2012, ApJ, 746, 161; Gladders et al. 2013, ApJ, 764, 177, Bayliss et al. 2011, ApJS, 193, 8). Kate Napier is a PhD Candidate in Astronomy at the University of Michigan. She is the first author of the MNRAS paper ''Extended X-ray emission from the z = 4.26 radio galaxy 4C 63.20'' that analyzed 100 ks of Chandra data. Kate is helping lead the Chandra X-ray data analysis of the z ~ 1 merger SPT-CL J0356-5337 (PI G. Mahler). She will lead the data analysis for DECALS J0542-2125. Dr. Keren Sharon is an expert on strong lens modeling, with extensive experience from building lens models based on multi-band HST imaging. She has worked extensively on several of the previously known lens systems where quasars are lensed by galaxy clusters: The first large separation lensed quasar SDSSJ1004 (Sharon et al. 2005, ApJ, 629, L73), and the sextuply lensed SDSSJ2222 which was discovered by our collaboration (Dahle et al. 2013, ApJ, 773, 146; Sharon et al. 2017, ApJ, 835, 5). Dr. Sharon was PI of a similar HST program (#13337) "Resolving the Cluster-Lensed Sextuple Quasar SDSSJ2222+2745", also including Co-Is Gladders, Bayliss and Dahle. This work has led to the following publications so far (several more are currently in preparation): * Sharon et al. (2017, ApJ, 835, 5): "Lens Model and Time Delay Predictions for the Sextuply Lensed Quasar SDSS J2222+2745". * Bayliss et al. (2017, ApJ, 845, L14): "Spatially Resolved Patchy Lyman-alpha Emission within the Central Kiloparsec of a Strongly Lensed Quasar Host Galaxy at z = 2.8". Dr. Matthew Bayliss is an expert in observational cosmology and extragalactic astrophysics. He has been the PI of several Chandra programs and will provide guidance to the PI. Dr. Haakon Dahle has led a successful photometric monitoring campaign to measure time delays for the cluster-lensed quasar SDSSJ2222+2745 (the first two time delays were published in Dahle et al. 2015, ApJ, 813, 67) and is currently leading a similar efforts for DECALS 0542-2125, SDSS J1326+4806 and SDSS J0909+4449, using the 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope. Dr. Michael Gladders is a galaxy cluster and strong lensing expert, with extensive experience in data handling and analysis (spectroscopic and photometric) and a publication record of ~200 refereed papers. He has built two instruments for the Magellan telescopes, and is an active user of many of the world's largest telescopes, and HST. His research group at the University of Chicago is focused on exploiting emerging galaxy cluster and strong lensing samples to answer questions about galaxy and structure formation and evolution. Dr. Jane Rigby is an expert on studying distant star-forming galaxies magnified by gravitational lensing, and has led the large spectroscopic programme MegaSaura to study the physics of such galaxies at redshifts similar to the lensed quasar in this proposal. Gourav Khullar is a PhD Candidate at the University of Chicago, with expertise in modeling stellar populations of quiescent galaxies in galaxy clusters, as well as high-redshift lensed galaxies, via Bayesian SED Fitting. He is a founding member of the collaboration that discovered DECALS J0542-2125 and will be involved in the multi-wavelength spectroscopic characterization of member galaxies in the merging system. Michael Martinez is a PhD student in Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, he led the discovery and confirmation of DECALS J0542-2125.
