I selected the UVIS2-C1K1C-CTE aperture for all of these observations, which according to my understanding results in a full-frame readout - please let me know if that is not correct.-1734643623----- Attempting Submission 1 (Tue Jun 13 17:39:38 GMT 2023) -----Resolving Star Formation At the Star Cluster Scale Down to ~30 pc at z=2.5Understanding the modes and physical scale of star-formation in the distant universe requires resolved studies of individual star-forming regions and their stellar populations. This is a proposal to use one of the most spectacular strongly lensed galaxies known to spatially resolve the properties of dozens of individual compact, star-forming clumps with physical sizes ~<30 pc at z=2.5. The fortuitous strong lensing configuration of the target system provides a truly unique opportunity to perform a spatially resolved census of the diffuse and clumpy star formation and ionized nebular gas in a lensed starburst galaxy at Cosmic Noon. We will obtain broadband NIRCam imaging and NIRSpec IFU spectroscopy to measure the stellar continuum from 0.13-1.3 microns, and nebular emission lines between 0.3-0.9 microns. Spectroscopy will inform spectral diagnostics of the nebular gas (ionization state, metallicity, dust extinction) and map the velocity structure of the galaxy. The spectroscopy and broadband SEDs will be used to jointly constrain the star formation histories and stellar populations of individual clumps and diffuse star-formation across the galaxy. All of this will be done on spatially resolved scales down to ~<30 pc. These analyses will reveal whether the compact star forming regions are associated with the larger galaxy structure, or if they have different phase space and chemical properties that identify them as proto- or newly formed young globular clusters. This program will unpack the diversity of star-forming structures and star formation histories, including any "pure" single-burst star-forming regions, within a starburst galaxy at z=2.5.This is a joint HST program to obtain UVIS F555W imaging of a strongly lensed galaxy. The total depth is 5 orbits, split into 5 individual single-orbit visits. Each of these visits is to be separated by at least 1 month to produce a dataset to test for variability within the strongly lensed galaxy.
The joint JWST proposal requests NIRSPec IFU spectroscopy and NIRCam imaging of a strongly lensed galaxy containing 26 resolved star-forming clumps with physical sizes of ~30-60 pc. The proposed observations (in combination with archival HST imaging) are designed to measure spatially resolved H-alpha nebular emission and broadband spectral energy distributions spanning 0.12-1.3 microns rest-frame. Nebular lines will inform spatially resolved diagnostics of the ionized gas, including the Balmer Decrement, N2/Ha and R23 metallicity proxies, and O3/O2 and O3/Hb ionization parameter measurements. The H-alpha emission line will also be measured with velocity precisions of <30 km/s, informing a high quality velocity map across the entire galaxy, including peculiar velocities of the dozens of individual compact star forming regions.Members of this proposal team have extensive expertise working with massive galaxy clusters and using strong lensing to study the properties of highly magnified galaxies across the entire observable electromagnetic spectrum.
Prof. M. Bayliss is an expert on multi-wavelength studies of star formation, gravitational lensing, and galaxy clusters. He has worked with imaging and spectroscopic data from the X-ray to the near infrared, and is an experienced user of Hubble, Chandra, and numerous 6-10m class ground based telescopes. Prof. Bayliss has led 5 HST observing programs, all studies of highly magnified strong lensing systems, and will serve as the overall project lead. All CoIs below will also contribute to some or all of: data reduction, analysis, and paper-writing.
Prof. Michael Gladders is a galaxy cluster and strong lensing expert, with extensive experience in data handling and analysis (spectroscopic and photometric) and a publication record of currently 196 refereed papers. He has built two instruments for the Magellan telescopes, and is an active user of many of the world's largest telescopes, and HST. His research group at the University of Chicago is focused on exploiting emerging galaxy cluster and strong lensing samples to answer questions about galaxy and structure formation and evolution.
Prof. Sharon leads the lensing analysis of several ongoing lensing survey. Sharon and her research group, including Remolina Gonzalez and Mahler, have ample experience in lens modeling and analysis of cluster lenses of all scales (including Frontier Fields, Johnson et al. 2014, Remolina Gonzalez et al. 2018; RELICS, Cerny et al. 2018, Paterno-Mahler et al. 2018; and SGAS, Sharon et al. 2019)
Co-I Dahle is an observational astronomer, with a focus on gravitational lensing (both strong and weak). He has been PI for two Cycle 25 HST programmes for imaging and grism spectroscopy of the bright "Sunburst Arc" at z=2.37. He is also PI of a recently approved HST Cycle 28 Mid-cycle programme to study a bright gravitationally lensed galaxy at z=3.29.
Dr. Rigby is the JWST Project Scientist for Operations and an expert on studying distant star-forming galaxies magnified by gravitational lensing, and has led the large spectroscopic programme MegaSaura to study the physics of such galaxies at redshifts similar to the lensed quasar in this proposal.
Dr. Keuhno Kim has expertise analyzing extreme star forming galaxies in the local universe, and also ditting the morphological properties of galaxy samples across a wide range of redshifts. He will contribute to the morphological analysis of the spatially resolved analysis of SGAS1110.
Co-I Florian is an expert in the morphologies, stellar populations, and physical conditions inside distant galaxies, particularly in those that have been gravitationally lensed and has extensive experience working with HST imaging data. He will contribute to the morphological analysis of the spatially resolved analysis of SGAS1110.
Co-I Roberson is a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati working with PI Bayliss, and has experience working on SED model analyses of high redshift star-forming galaxies.
Co-I Navarre is a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati working with PI Bayliss, and has experience analyzing the emission line properties of high redshift star-forming galaxies.
Dr. Emil Rivera-Thorsen is an expert on the properties of Lyman-alpha and Lyman continuum emitting galaxies, as well as on spatially resolved properties of starburst galaxies. He will contribute to the interpretation and analysis for this program.
Dr Gourav Khullar has extensive experience with stellar populatoin modeling, and has applied SPS models to a variety of high-redshift galaxies. He will contribute to the SPS modeling effort for SGAS1110, incorporating both broadband SED and emission line spectroscopic constraints.
Prof. Whitaker is an expert on galaxy evolution and quenching, and has extensive experience using space-based observations to measure the stellar populations in distant galaxies.
