It is therefore a key benchmark for detailed investigations of multi-planet system architecture, particularly for low mass stars. Recent ground-based radial velocity campaigns indicate the presence of at least one --and possibly a second-- exo-planet orbiting Proxima Centauri. To test the multi-planet configuration of this system, we propose to use HST in spatial-scanning mode to obtain the most precise relative astrometry for Proxima Centauri to date (~20 micro-arc-seconds). The proposed sequence of six (6) epochs of observations over three (3) years will unambiguously detect the astrometric perturbation of Proxima Centauri induced by the hypothesized planet c, and constrain that planet's orbital geometry and mass. Observing Proxima Centauri Dr. Luigi Bedin (PI, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, INAF-OAPD) is an expert on imaging photometry and astrometry with HST under-sampled images, and has contributed to state of the art calibrations and corrections of HST data (Anderson & Bedin 2017MNRAS.470..948; 2010PASP..122.1035; Bellini, Anderson & Bedin 2011PASP..123..622B). Dr. Bedin has led the development and the application of precision astrometric techniques with HST/WFC3 for low-temperature brown dwarfs (Bedin et al. 2017, MNRAS, 470, 1140), and in particular to link HST WFC3 astrometry to the Gaia reference system at sub-mas levels (Bedin & Fontanive 2018, MNRAS, 481, 5339; Bedin & Fontanive 2020, MNRAS, 494, 2068; Fontanive, Bedin & Bardalez Gagliuffi 2021, MNRAS,501, 911). Dr. Bedin will lead and coordinate: the data planning, the data reduction, the technical analyses of the observations, the publication of results, and manage the overall program. Dr. Bedin led the development and application of precision astrometric techniques with HST/WFC3 for low-temperature brown dwarfs (Bedin et al. 2017, MNRAS, 470, 1140B). He will lead analysis to extract precision astrometric measurements, and astrometric parameters. Prof. Adam Burgasser (US Admin CoI, UCSD) is an expert on the discovery, spectral characterization, and multiplicity of the lowest-mass stars and brown dwarfs. He led two successful HST programs examining the multiplicity of T dwarfs (Burgasser et al. 2003, ApJ, 586, 512; 2006; ApJS, 166, 585), a large ground-based program to measure the astrometric orbits of L-T spectral blend binaries (Sahlmann, Burgasser et al. 2020, MNRAS, 495, 1136), and is a member of the TRAPPIST and SPECULOOS teams that uncovered TRAPPIST-1 (Gillon et al. 2017, Nature, 542, 456) and the eclipsing brown dwarf system SPEC 1510-2828 (Triaud, Burgasser, et al. 2020, Nature Astronomy, 4, 650). Prof. Burgasser will contribute to the scientific interpretation and analysis of the data, including orbit fitting.
