Observations have been dedicated to this task across the electromagnetic spectrum each yielding specialized insights into the evolving populations of the Universe. Yet something is missing: optical polarimetry! We propose to explore the polarized sky at faint magnitudes, impossible from the ground, to augment our insights in the unique ways provided by polarimetry. Light is polarized by intrinsic non-thermal synchrotron emission, by dust and electron scattering, and by transmission through dust aligned by magnetic fields. With a deep polarized view of the HDF-N in the most sensitive ACS mode, we will determine the prevalence of polarized sources at faint magnitudes and determine their origin from the existing wealth of ancillary data. We anticipate identifying active nuclei, non-thermal sources, aligned radio galaxies, dusty star forming regions, deeply shrouded infra-red emitters, and luminous AGN hidden but revealed through their scattered light. An important corollary of the study will be an assessment of the degree to which polarization, a likely requirement for future exoplanet direct detection missions, may be relied upon at faint magnitudes to reveal planets against the crowded background of astrophysical sources. Only HST can make these observations, now and for the foreseeable future. To build up the deepest and most optimal polarization map of the field, and to build up the deepest WFC3 parallel fields, we limit the observations to two specific ORI values separated by 90deg and consistent with HDF CVZ scheduling (and guide-stars). Splitting the 24 orbits between two ORI-restricted calendar windows also eases schedulability, We have chosen the specific ORI values of 186 and 096, to fall within the Cyc32 boundary. Initial discussions with the PC suggest that the first epoch can only accommodate guidestar ORIs at >199 and <177. We intend to refine the ORI settings to best achieve a 90deg separation between epochs, once we know the available ORI range for the second epoch. Because of the low background of WFC polarizer exposures, we bundle the WFC observations into sets of three ~1640sec exposures per CVZ orbit --- one for each of POL0V, POL60V, and POL120V. In parallel, we take either 4 or 5 UVIS F814W exposures per CVZ orbit. For reduction in buffer-dump overhead, the last orbit of each visit is divided into 5 UVIS exposures rather than 4. The dithering occurs across orbits within four-orbit visits, whose exposures are linked with a SEQ-NON-INT to preserve the integrity of the subpixel dither. We adopt the optimized WFC+UVIS co-dither pattern given in Instrument Science Report ACS 2023-04 (Table 4), with inter-visit displacements of delta-POSTARGX = -0.1,0,+0.1" within each epoch. Dr. William Sparks has extensive experience of HST instrumentation and was deputy head of the Instrument Division at STScI. As a member of the ACS Science Definition team, his primary responsibility was the implementation of the polarimetric capability. Now at the SETI Institute (STScI emeritus), he continues research on a diverse astronomical portfolio including HST polarimetry projects, and instrumentation for polarimetry. Dr. Eileen Meyer has extensive experience with HST, including polarimetric imaging of AGN jets and other faint sources. She is a highly multi-wavelength observational astronomer, working with a wide range of observatories including the VLA, VLBA, SMA, ALMA, HST, Swift, Chandra, Fermi, and VERITAS. In addition to her primary expertise in AGN studies, she has more recently added optical polarimetry instrumentation and solar-system observations to her research areas. Dr. Devon Clautice is a postdoctoral researcher at Florida Institute of Technology with experience of multiwavelength observations of AGN jets, including data reduction and analysis of HST ACS/WFC F606W polarimetry and WFC3 IR and UVIS imaging. Dr. D.C. Hines is an expert in spectropolarimetry and imaging polarimetry. He is the polarimetry mode lead for the HST/ACS instrument, and is responsible for polarimetry calibrations. Hines has extensive experience with HST observations and their reductions: PI on 20 GO/CAL/Archive HST programs (16 for HST polarimetry), and Co-I on 11 GO/CAL/Archive HST polarimetry programs observing debris disks, pre-planetary nebulae, and AGNs. Hines has published over 195 refereed publications as primary and co-author. He will be responsible for assisting in planning the observations, reducing the data, and the publication of results. Dr. Grogin is a leading expert in the design and execution of large extragalactic imaging and spectroscopic surveys with HST, and particularly of surveys in the proposed field (incl. GOODS; CANDELS; FIGS; UVUDF; UVCANDELS). As STScI Team Lead of the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys, he is well-versed in the latest calibration efforts with the ACS polarizers. His science interests include multiwavelength studies of distant lower-luminosity AGN, for which sensitive optical polarization observations represent a new frontier. Prof Eric Perlman is an expert on AGN jet physics, AGN evolution and the relationship of active nuclei to their galactic surroundings. He is an experienced observer with HST, Chandra, the VLA and VLBA and many other telescopes. His extensive experience with HST polarimetry includes being PI of 6 HST programs featuring polarimetry (using both ACS and WFPC2), and writing over a dozen papers using the capability.
