POS-TARGs used to minimize slews and based on prior program experienceInvestigating Saturn's Equatorial Winds at EquinoxWe propose a time-critical multi-wavelength study to develop a 3D picture of Saturn's equatorial region near equinox using 12 orbits of HST WFC3/UVIS and 10.6 hours of JWST MIRI/MRS. Saturn's stratospheric temperatures, vertical windshears, and meridional flows are influenced by seasonal temperature gradients, as well as wave-driven equatorial oscillations. We propose to test 5 hypotheses: 1) The speed, structure, and altitude of Saturn's stratospheric equatorial jet has changed since 2015 due to modulation by the equatorial oscillation; 2. Planetary-scale stratospheric circulations will switch direction at equinox; 3: Saturn's tropical windshear zones are asymmetric about the equator due to seasonal contrasts, affecting the 3D structure of the equatorial zonal jet; 4. Saturn's post-winter clouds and hazes (south) will be thinner and have different composition than post-summer (north); 5: Stratospheric hydrocarbons will be symmetric about the equator at high pressures but show deeper local maxima at northern and southern latitudes. We will address these hypotheses by using the powerful combined broad wavelength coverage of these two instruments to measure atmospheric temperatures, cloud-traced wind fields, and compositional tracers of upper altitude meridional circulation. These values will be compared with 2015 HST + Cassini solstice values, as well as 2022 MIRI data, to better understand the combined effects of solar insolation and wave-driven oscillations on atmospheric circulation. The unique geometry present around equinox, with both hemispheres simultanenously visible, will not repeat until 2039.A total of 12 HST orbits are requested to maximize longitudinal coverage, in two sets of 6 contiguous orbits, to achieve global coverage with ~11-hour separations for high accuracy velocity mapping. Sets can be separated by an orbit to avoid contiguous viewing violations.
We request HST/JWST observations occur as close to equinox and minimum ring opening angles as possible, 16 Sept. (HST) and 24 Nov. 2025 (JWST). Acceptable Saturn RGM roll angles only occur between 2 to 24 Sept. 2025 and 3 June to 5 Oct. 2026, Fig. 5. Although the former window falls before the notional start of Cycle 33, it is strongly preferred as it gives the best Saturn latitude visibility and is close enough in time to the JWST Nov. 2025 viewing period for determining zonal-mean trends to better constrain the timing of circulation reversal. If it is not possible to schedule in Sept./Nov. 2025, the less ideal 2026 window is acceptable, however the JWST meteoroid avoidance window would also need to be waived.All investigators on the team have prior experience with Hubble data and have published extensively about the topics proposed.
Dr. Simon, the program PI, has decades of experience in observing the outer planets with HST and will oversee the observation design and execution. She will lead the subsequent analysis of the Hubble data and provide oversight on the JWST data. As the PI of the Hubble OPAL program, she will coordinate any additional OPAL data required for this study. Lastly, she was a co-I on the Cassini/CIRS instrument, involved with retrieving atmospheric temperatures and stratospheric composition.
Co-I Fletcher is experienced with the reduction of JWST MIRI data. He led the JWST GTO program 1247 during Cycle 1, and was responsible for analysing the Saturn atmospheric spectra to study the seasonal evolution post-Cassini. Fletcher was a co-investigator of the Cassini/CIRS experiment, and was responsible for tracking Saturn's seasonal temperatures and composition between 2004 and 2017 using the Oxford-based radiative-transfer and retrieval algorithm, NEMESIS.
Co-I Antunano has significant experience with Saturn's atmospheric dynamics, and will aid in connecting the JWST-derived temperatures to the windfield of Saturn, particularly with respect to the expected vertical oscillations.
Co-I Wong has more than a decade of experience in HST observing, particularly with the OPAL program. He brings unique experience in WFC3 fringe analysis and removal and he will be responsible for defringing the narrowband data. He will also contribute to zonal wind retrieval and assignment of pressure levels.
Co-I Hueso is highly experienced at recovering Saturn wind vectors from low contrast Hubble data.
