0 Assigned ID: 6261 ----- Attempting Submission 1 (Wed Apr 09 18:56:14 GMT 2025) ----- We propose a comprehensive survey of the diffuse ionized gas in and around the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using an analysis of archival ULLYSES data. By measuring the absorption from low-ion and high-ion metal lines in the COS and STIS spectra of 133 massive stars in the SMC, we will characterize the kinematics and ionization conditions in the diffuse disk and halo gas of the SMC. Specific goals include mapping the gas kinematics across the face of the SMC, measuring the gas ionization level, determining the influence of the bright star-forming region NGC 346 on the gas, and quantifying the SMC's mass loss rate in ionized gas. This study will advance our understanding of the Magellanic System and the fueling of future star formation in the Milky Way, since much of the gas lost by the SMC will ultimately enter the Milky Way. More broadly, this study will address gas transfer in interacting host/satellite systems and shed light on how low-mass star-forming satellite galaxies lose gas through ionized outflows and interactions with their massive hosts. The PI Dr Andrew Fox is an expert in the gaseous halos of galaxies and the analysis of UV spectra. He has led ten HST GO and two AR proposals, and has first-authored over 20 refereed journal papers in related fields. He will coordinate and oversee the analysis and manage the Co-I contributions. Dr Elena D'Onghia is an expert on galaxy evolution and on the dynamical evolution of the Magellanic System. She led a 2016 Annual Reviews article on the Magellanic Stream. Dr Dhanesh Krishnarao is an expert with modeling the Magellanic CGM. He is leading the analysis of the high ions in the Magellanic Corona from HST archival program 16363. Dr Kat Barger is an expert on outflows from the Magellanic Clouds and on ionized gas in the Magellanic System. She is the PI of a Legacy Archival Program to study the LMC outflows using ULLYSES spectra. Dr Scott Lucchini is an expert on simulations of the Magellanic System. He has published three papers on this subject (including one in Nature). Dr David French is an expert in UV data reduction, analysis, and interpretation, with particular emphasis on the local CGM. He has led two HST archival proposals on CGM related science, resulting in 3 referred publications. He has extensive experience with UV space instruments including HST/COS, HST/STIS, and FUSE. Dr Frances Cashman is an expert on the ISM and IGM and on Cloudy simulations of interstellar absorbers, and the properties of interstellar gas near the Galactic Center. Dr Sapna Mishra is an expert in UV and optical quasar absorption line spectroscopy, with a focus on studying the IGM, CGM, galaxy cluster outskirts and quasar outflows. Dr Debopam Som is an expert on the circumgalactic medium of galaxies and quasar absorption line systems. He has extensive experience in the analysis of ground-based and HST UV spectroscopic data probing diffuse ionized gas, and has led/co-authored papers featuring data from these observations. Dr. Ravi Sankrit has long experience in the study of shocked and photoionized gas in nebulae and in the interstellar medium. He was part of a team that prepared the Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) stellar sight-line atlas of the Magellanic Clouds. Dr Claire Murray is an expert in the analysis and interpretation of 21cm neutral hydrogen observations, as well as the structure and properties of the SMC traced by resolved stellar populations. Dr Suraj Poudel is an expert on the life cycle of metals and gas in the CGM, QSO absorption-line systems, and the properties of gaseous outflows/inflows in the LMC. Dr Nick Pingel is an expert in the atomic neutral hydrogen component of the ISM, with specific experience in characterizing its thermal properties, kinematics, and turbulence properties within the Milky Way, Magellanic System, and Local Group galaxies. Dr Annalisa De Cia is an expert on ISM chemical abundances, dust depletion, and the analysis of UV absorption-line profiles. Dr Josh Peek is an expert on the 3D structure of the interstellar medium in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, and has considerably experience with HST absorption line spectroscopy.
