Receipt: # 18368-1 ----- Attempting Submission 2 (Wed Aug 19 04:37:31 GMT 2026) ----- Unprecedented Early UV Spectroscopy of a Nearby Supernova We propose an ultra-disruptive target of opportunity (ToO) ultraviolet spectroscopic sequence of one nearby SN discovered within ~24 hours of explosion. We will fully complement these observations with a rapid response, high cadence early light curve, along with a optical+near-infrared (NIR) ground-based follow-up campaign. Our observations will provide an unprecedented view of the shock-breakout of SN explosions and the SN interaction, with either a stellar companion or circumstellar medium (CSM), and it will give key insights on the last phases of stellar evolution. At early times, our view of the SN is still incomplete, as our optical observations cover less than ~1% of the total emission. Only UV spectroscopy will allow us to put firm constraints on the physical conditions of the explosion and properties of the progenitor, like metallicity. For core-collapse SNe, the early temperature evolution can constrain the progenitor outer density profile. The UV light, or the SN ejecta, can ionize the CSM and can constrain the progenitor wind speed and CSM extent tracing back its mass-loss history. For type Ia SNe, recent very early light curve excesses point to interaction with a companion star, CSM interaction or an unusual nickel distribution, but models cannot reproduce UV light curves. Only spectroscopy will reveal the progenitors of these essential cosmological tools. Very early UV spectroscopy of a nearby SN is a completely unique observation that only HST can provide, and the SN community may not have this opportunity again for the foreseeable future. Our primary science goal is to trace the very early spectral evolution tied to shock breakout, and CSM or companion star interaction in one very nearby supernova. These signatures disappear on 3 day timescales, aside from special cases (such as type IIn SNe), where they may persist. To do this, we need a UV spectrum as soon as possible after explosion. We also request two additional epochs of UV spectroscopy in quick succession, spaced one day apart after the initial observation and 2 other observations 7 days and 14 days after the first HST observation. Briefly, as soon as we have identified a potential SN candidate for HST we will begin communicating with our STScI Program Coordinator regarding a potential trigger and scheduling constraints. At that time we will provide coordinates and magnitude estimate. While the STScl Program coordinator will check the scheduling constraints to figured out when it will be possible to Trigger our program, we will aquire additional data to confirm that the target satisfies our triggering constraints (additional data with SWIFT, spectroscopic confirmation). This process may take up to 6-12 hours. Once we have fulfilled all of our trigger criteria described above, we will submit the APT Phase II and remain in contact with STScI throughout the process thereafter. The first epoch (with STIS/CCD) should be executed as soon as possible, with the subsequent two epochs spaced 1 day apart. Two final epochs spaced +7 and +14 days after the initial epochs ensure that we will have a full UV spectroscopic sequence. The DLT40 team runs a 12-24-hour cadence SN search, targeting prominent galaxies within 40 Mpc with the aim of finding about 10 very young and nearby SNe per year. We operate in real time, with members of our team on watch constantly, and a machine-learning classifier alerting the team when especially good transient candidates are uncovered in our survey. Our search is also directly tied to the Global Supernova Project for very rapid follow-up of our discoveries within minutes. The DLT40 team also has expertise on the analysis of STIS data. Recently, the DLT40 team has successfully triggered a disruptive ToO on SN2022acko with HST to obtain the STIS FUV and NUV spectra, resulting in the first FUV observations of a Type IIP SN within a week of explosion. The data has been analyzed and published. We also have a successful DDT ToO for the recently discovered nearby type II SN2023ixf. N. Meza-Retamal is a member of the DLT40 team focusing his thesis work on the early interaction signatures of SNe~II, along with understanding their progenitors. He is the PI of our Cycle 32 PID 17736. Aravind P. Ravi is a posdoc in the DLT40 team and has expertise on high energy emission in SNe. He is also leading our UC Davis NIR observation program. D. Mehta is a member of the DLT40 team focusing on short plateau SNe. Her thesis involves HST UV photometry of SNe~II. E. Hoang is a member of the DLT40 team focusing on stripped-envelope SNe. B. Subrayan specializes in multi-wavelength observations of supernovae, supernova remnants, tidal disruption events, and exotic transients. She also has an extensive background in applications of statistical methods and machine learning in time-domain astronomy. K. A. Bostroem extensive experience with the STIS data reduction and the reduction and analysis of core collapse supernovae observations with Swift and Gemini. Her research focuses on understanding the progenitors of hydrogen-rich CC SNe. She led the HST STIS data analysis of SN2022acko, and will lead the UV spectroscopy work on SN2023ixf as well. C. Ransome is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on unusual, and interacting supernovae, their progenitors and host environments. He has experience in many ground based facilities as well as HST and JWST. J. Pearson is a final year graduate student at the University of Arizona. Her thesis work focuses on understanding the final moments of the lives of massive stars through the observation of nearby SNe. As part of this work she has extensively used HST, JWST, and ground-based observations. M. Shrestha is an expert in high-energy transients such as gamma-ray bursts, core-collapse (CC) SNe, and kilonovae. She has extensive experience reducing and analyzing JWST, HST, and ground-based observation. B. Hsu is a graduate student at the University of Arizona working on the intersection of observations and numerical simulations of CCSNe, with a current focus on the complex CSM environments of Type II SNe.
