Abstract We propose two HST orbits, nearly simultaneous with our approved Chandra Cycle 5 program, to study the supersoft source 1E1339.8+2837 and other accreting binaries in the globular cluster M3. Using the ACS/HRC, we will obtain excellent photometry on the recently identified optical counterpart of 1E1339.8+2837 in the F220W, F250W and F330W bands. Using the ACS/WFC, we will survey M3's central regions in B, V, and I to identify counterparts to other Chandra sources, and also obtain excellent B, V, and I photometry of the supersoft source. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10008( 3) - 10/14/03 08:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This ACS dataset will include an orbit of HRC ultraviolet exposures and an orbit of ACS B, V, and I exposures on the globular cluster M3. (Note that this observation is part of a joint Chandra/HST program.) The HRC orbit involves dithered exposures in F220W (310s) and F250W (230s), and two dithered exposure pairs in F330W (both 300s). These are designed to provide good photometry of 1E1339, and produce serendipitous science in F330W. The WFC orbit involves dithered full-frame exposures in B (340s) and V (339s), and dithered exposures in I (145s) using a 2k*2k subarray of the WFC. These WFC exposures are designed to cover as much of M3 as possible while ensuring good photometry of 1E1339.
