Abstract We propose a deep survey in the second lowest extinction (after Baade's Window) region in the galactic bulge, the window identified by Stanek (1998) at l, b ~0.25, -2.1. This will complement our deep HST/Chandra survey of Baade's Window carried out in July 2003 and allow comparative source populations, and constraints on the gradient towards the galactic center, to be derived. Nine HST orbits are requested to do the optical identifications in this field down to Mv ~ 9, sufficient to identify most CVs and qLMXBs. This will constrain the compact object populations in the galactic bulge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10009( 5) - 10/16/03 06:37 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Nine orbits have been allocated to observe a region near the galactic center with low n(H) ("Stanek's Window"). We request that the observations be scheduled simultaneously with a 100 ksec Chandra pointing of the same field. Our observational setup is intended to make a 2x2 ACS/WFC mosaic of Stanek's Window. Each quadrant of the mosaic will be observed for two orbits. The first orbit in each pair has the following exposure sequence: 1x 250s in F625W, 3x 410s in F658N, 1x 510s in F435W. The sequence for the second orbit is similar (1x 250s in F625W, 3x 440s in F658N, 1x 510s in F435W) but with a small offset pointing (2 pix in x and y) for CR and hot pixel removal. Auto-parallel observations in the ACS/HRC are performed during the last exposure of these orbits. The 9th orbit (1x 180s in F625W, 3x 340s in F625W, 2x 340s in F435W), will be aimed at the center of the mosaic. The nine orbits are split in two visits of 4 orbits + 5 orbits, since at most 5 orbits can be fit between SAA passages and we request that both orbits that are pointed at the same corner of the mosaic are scheduled consecutively. The four sections of the mosaic have a few arcsecs of overlap. They are specified with POS-TARG offsets from the center of the mosaic at the target position (POS-TARG=(0, 0)). We use a pattern that worked well for previous observations (GO9442, GO9690). This pattern is non-square to take into account the shape of the ACS-detectors on the sky. Following are the POS-TARG values for each orbit. In addition, the APT generates the warning message, POS TARG OUTSIDE OF APERTURE, for exposures 1-6 of visit 2. These appear to indicate that the center of the mosaic lies outside WFC aperture for these exposures (position 3). This is not a problem, since two of the mosaic positions do include the mosaic center, as verified with the VTT. We have discussed this issue with our PC, Beth Perriello.
