Abstract We propose to accurately determine the rotational period of comet Tempel 1. This is crucial for enabling all of the science associated with the Deep Impact mission. It will also, in combination with ground-based data already on hand and images to be obtained from Deep Impact, provide the best dataset ever for investigating whether excited state rotation exists in any comet other than Halley. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10115( 24) - 04/13/04 13:05 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In order to resolve ambiguities in the rotational period (22 vs. 42 hours) due to diurnal sampling, we require observations over a single rotational period (nominally 42 hours for the longer of the two ambiguous periods). This means that we must observe during an SAA-free window, which occurs roughly May 3 to May 9 of 2004. We require observations in every second orbit for the entire period and every orbit for one quarter of that period. The quarter of the period with every orbit used can occur anywhere in the full period, as long as it represents a continguous series of orbits, although here it is specified as the first 11 orbits. Assuming that the contiguous period is at the beginning of the program, this results in a series of 11 consecutive orbits, followed by alternating skipped orbits and orbits with observations, i.e. observations in orbits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, for a total of 18 orbits. The observations in each orbit will be 3 exposures with ACS-HRC and the F606W filter. We would like to use the 3-point sub-pixel dither line, pattern 23, on STSI web page http://www.stsci.edu/hst/acs/proposing/dither/ACS-HRC-DITHER-LINE.html if this is supported in processing. The APT, however, appears to limit us to the 2- point dither that is standard as pattern #1.
