Abstract Ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies are a new type of galaxy we have discovered in the central regions of the Fornax and Virgo galaxy clusters. Our most recent observations in the Fornax Cluster show that UCDs outnumber normal galaxies in the centre of that cluster. Here we propose snapshot imaging of UCDs in the Fornax and Virgo clusters to test theories of how these fascinating objects formed. In particular we wish to image Virgo cluster UCDs for which we have ground-based Keck spectroscopy to test predictions that they formed more recently than the Fornax UCDs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10137( 5) - 09/02/04 08:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our main goal is to determine the physical and chemical structure of a large sample of UCDs using ACS/HRC to obtain high-resolution color images. Our science goals can be achieved with random subsamples of the UCD population, so we request snapshot observations. A minimum sample size of about 25 UCDs is required to cover the full range of UCD luminosity and environment, so we request snapshots of 50 targets. The snapshots will let us make informed choices for deeper imaging in a future cycle, if any particularly notable structures are identified. The 8 Virgo UCDs (we have Keck-II/ESI spectra for 6, but no HST imaging for any) and the larger UCD in Fornax for which we have evidence of substructure (but no high-resolution color data) will be assigned high priority in our target list. The remaining targets are selected at random from the sample shown in Fig.1, excluding the other 4 previously imaged with STIS and some of those closest to NGC1399 (to avoid true globular clusters). We have placed a subset of these at high priority to ensure the remaining observations sample a range of UCD properties and locations in the cluster. We propose the same strategy as we used with STIS: observing each target for a single visit of one orbit duration with no orientation restrictions. The observations can therefore be executed very efficiently in snapshot mode. We are imaging with excellent APM coordinates (prepared for the 2dF observations) so we do not need any target acquisition time, only the guide star acquisition. The extra efficiency of the ACS/HRC allows us to obtain color information using the broad V (F606W) and I (F814W) filters, whilst obtaining similar combined counts to our previous unfiltered (50CCD) STIS exposures. We chose these bands to give the best total throughput (assuming a G0V spectrum) and comparison with other observations. For snapshots we limit the observation time to 45 minutes and observe each target in both filters in this single visit time. Allowing for ACS/HRC overheads, we would observe each target for 2x435 sec in V, then 2x525 sec in I. We request small dithers (but no CRsplits) between all exposures to deal with hot pixels and improve the spatial sampling. The dithers are vital to correct for bad pixels when measuring the cores of these objects which only occupy a few pixels. We can remove cosmic ray events by using integer pixel shifts to create CR masks. We can stack the images from both filters to maximize our sensitivity for profile measurements, hence we dither between filters. We want to measure the profiles out to some reasonably faint isophote (24.5 V mag/arcsec**2) to see if they flatten (as would the nuclei of very low SB dE) or steepen (as if it were tidally truncated). The combined exposures would allow us to measure this profile to +/-5% or better at a radius of 0.7 arcsec (making some allowance for the PSF) in an annulus 0.15 arcsec thick.
