Abstract The existence of strong correlations between the mass of supermassive black holes and galaxy bulge properties implies that there is an intimate connection between their formation and evolution. How do supermassive black holes grow and how did the correlations come about? Is the growth of supermassive black holes coeval with the growth of the bulge, and is a bulge necessary for AGN activity at high z? We propose to use HST NICMOS to image 9 low-luminosity broad-line AGNs at z~3 in the restframe B-band, identified through the Lyman-break technique. This sample is unique because the AGN luminosities are comparable to Seyfert-like nuclei at z~3, and thus are some of the lowest that have been selected optically. Because of the low total luminosity of the sample, the hosts are likely to be Lyman-break galaxies, which are believed to be the progenitor galaxies of the local Hubble sequence. The goal is to directly detect their host galaxies and to separate the AGN, in order to study the host galaxy morphology and luminosity. From measurement of the bulge luminosity and black hole mass (through available spectra), we will study the black hole-bulge coevolution out to z~3. We will also compare the luminosity and morphology of these faint AGN hosts with the more luminous and massive host galaxies found in previous HST studies of quasars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10149( 4) - 06/17/04 10:46 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This study images a sample of 9 Lyman-break galaxies at z~3 that host broad- line, quasar-like AGNs, in the NICMOS H-band (3--4 orbits per object). This is an especially chosen subset of LBG AGNs whose BH masses can be determined from available ground-based Keck spectra. Because of the diversity in morphology exhibited by LBGs, 9 objects are minimum for probing the underlying distribution. The primary goal is to accurately decompose the host from the AGN in F160W images (restframe B) to quantify the host galaxy morphology. This AGN sample is unique. It contains some of the lowest luminosity, optically selected, AGNs known at z~ 3, based on LBG selection criteria. The selection function of LBGs is well understood, leading to the hypothesis that LBGs may be the progenitors of nearby galaxies that define the Hubble sequence. Because of the low total AGN + host luminosity (20 < R_AB < 24 mag), the host galaxies will be fainter than traditional quasar hosts. The contrast between the AGN and the host galaxy is likely to be at least 5 times better for studying host galaxies than in normal quasars, assuming the local M_bh-L_bulge relation. We will be able to study the morphology of the LBG hosts out to z~3 at a level of detail that is unprecedented in luminous AGN studies. Our exposure time is driven by our interest to establish the morphological types for the host galaxies (i.e., whether their surface brightness profiles are bulge or disk dominated, regular or irregular). Previous studies by Ridgway et al. (2001) and Kukula et al. (2001) show that 3 orbits are sufficient to detect host galaxies of H~ 22 mag beneath luminous AGNs. Our AGNs are typically 2--3 magnitudes fainter. With the improved sensitivity of NICMOS, our equivalent exposures are about 4--6 orbits long. The average brightness of LBGs at z~3 is ~24.6 (Steidel et al. 2002), which corresponds to ~21-22 mag, depending on the galaxy spectral energy distribution. For our faintest object, which has H_Vega~ 22 mag, we request 4 orbits.
