Abstract Orientation-based unification schemes are now well-established as the basis for understanding the relationships between different classes of AGN. However, our recent study of the optical polarization properties of Seyfert 1 galaxies indicates that scattered light emerging from these objects often follows a different path to that in Seyfert 2's, indicating that the simplest unification geometry is incomplete. We have developed a generic scattering model for Seyfert nuclei which includes a compact, equatorial scattering region located within the circum-nuclear torus and the 'classic' polar scattering region outside it. We propose to test this model by using NICMOS to make NIR imaging observations that will allow us to isolate the two scattering regions within individual objects. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10160( 2) - 05/14/04 14:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our observations will be taken with the three long wavelength polarizers (POL0L, POL120L, POL240L), which are intermediate-band filters (FWHM ~ 0.2 ?m) centred on a wavelength of 2.0 ?m. These long wavelength polarizers are preferred to the short wavelength NIC1 polarizers because they sample a wavelength range that results in a larger (factor ~10) reduction in extinction along the line-of-sight to the equatorial scattering region. Our key science goal is to measure the polarization of the nuclear point source. From previous NICMOS observations (Quillen et al. 2001, 547, 129), the unresolved nuclear sources in our target objects typically have FW160 fluxes ~10-20mJy. To obtain a polarization accuracy ~0.2% on the unresolved nucleus while avoiding saturation, we will obtain a series of 12 x 10 s exposures in each of the 3 polarizers. Such precision is necessary because we expect relatively low polarization on the nucleus due to dilution by the (unpolarized) direct light from the AGN (the equatorial scattering dominated S1's typically have optical polarizations ~0.5 - 1%). From 14 arcsec aperture 2MASS fluxes, we estimate that the typical K-band surface brightness of the extended light in the central few arcseconds of our target objects is 14 mag. sq.arcsec. From ground-based measurements, polar-scattering dominated Seyferts 1s typically have polarizations ~1-5 %. At HST resolutions it is reasonable to expect the circum- nuclear (polar-scattering) regions to have polarizations at the ~5-10% level. To measure the polarization of the circum-nuclear regions we will obtain total exposures of approximately 400 s in each of the three polarizers. With moderate spatial binning (4x4) This will yield a total S/N ~100, sufficient to determine the polarization to within 0.5%. Additional exposures off source will be required for background and pedastal removal. For each POL filter observation we will execute a dither pattern to reduce the impact of cosmetic defects. Allowing for overheads (guide stars acquisition/reacquisition, instrumental overheads, small angle manouvers etc.) we require 1 orbit per source, for a total of 6 orbits to observe our complete sample of 6 sources.
