Abstract Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs, LIR = 10^11-10^12Lsol) and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (LIR>10^12Lsol) account for approximately 75% of all the galaxies detected in the mid-infrared in the redshift range z=0-1.5. In the local universe it is found that LIRGs are predominantly powered by intense star formation (SF). However, the physical conditions and processes governing such dramatic activity over scales of tens to a few hundred parsecs are poorly known. In the last decade HST has been playing a significant role, mainly with the discovery of super star cluters (SSCs), and more recently, giant HII regions. Based on observations of a few LIRGs, we found that these giant HII regions and associated SSCs appear to be more common in LIRGs than in normal galaxies, and may dominate the star formation activity in LIRGs. A larger sample is required to address fundamental questions. We propose an HST/NICMOS targeted campaign of a volume limited sample (v<5200km/s) of 24 LIRGs. This proposal will probe the role of giant HII regions in the overall energetics of the current star formation, their relation to SSCs, and the dependence of star formation properties on other parameters of LIRGs. Such detailed knowledge of the SF properties of LIRGs in the local universe is essential for understanding galaxies at high redshift. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10169( 4) - 08/11/04 07:21 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain broad-band imaging through the NIC2 F110W and F160W filters, and Pa-alpha (lambda_rest=1.87micron) narrow-band imaging using the NIC2 F190N and NIC2 F187N filters, the latter to perform the continuum subtraction. The broad- band images will be used to locate star clusters. The J-H colors will provide an estimate of the extinction to the stars. The continuum subtracted Pa-alpha images will reveal the locations of the HII regions. We will observe each target within one orbit, except for a few targets. NGC3110 will require two orbits, one to observe the nuclear region and the second one to observe a star forming region within this galaxy. IC4687 will need an extra pointing to observe the companion galaxy IC4686 (the IRAS beam includes both galaxies in this system). IC~4518 is comprised of two galaxies, so two pointings are needed. All these observations are included in the Observing Summary Section as individual targets. A typical orbit will involve the following filters and integration times: NIC2 F110W (80sx3), NIC2 F160W (80sx3), NIC2 F190N (~320x3) and NIC2 F187N (~320sx3). The integration times for the F190N and F187N filters are approximate as they depend on the duration of the orbit for each target. The images will be taken with a three-point spiral dither to perform a good correction for bad pixels and cosmic rays, as well as to improve the spatial resolution.
