Abstract We propose Snapshot observations of Uranus and Neptune to monitor changes in their atmospheres on time scales of weeks, months, and years. Uranus is rapidly approaching equinox in 2007, with another 4 degrees of latitude becoming visible every year. Recent HST observations during this epoch (including 6818: Hammel, Lockwood, and Rages; 7885: Hammel, Karkoschka, and Marley; 8680: Hammel, Rages, Lockwood, and Marley; and 8634: Rages, Hammel, Lockwood, Marley, and McKay) have revealed strongly wavelength-dependent latitudinal structure and the presence of numerous visible-wavelength cloud features in the northern hemisphere. Long-term ground-based observations (Lockwood and Thompson 1999) show seasonal brightness changes whose origins are not well understood. Recent near-IR images of Neptune obtained using adaptive optics on the Keck Telesccope together with images from our Cycle 9 Snapshot program (8634) show a general increase in activity at south temperate latitudes as well as the possible development of another Great Dark Spot. Further Snapshot observations of these two dynamic planets will elucidate the nature of long-term changes in their zonal atmospheric bands and clarify the processes of formation, evolution, and dissipation of discrete albedo features. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10170( 3) - 05/13/04 13:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ These are Snapshot observations of Uranus and Neptune to monitor changes in their zonal bands and discrete albedo features on time scales of weeks and months, in order to characterize the underlying changes in the vertical cloud and aerosol structure. In contrast with standard GO programs, which in the past have produced observations separated by intervals of a year or more, we intend to obtain data at intervals of 1-2 months. In exchange we sacrifice longitudinal coverage and some wavelengths with long exposure requirements. Our filter selection is designed to constrain the vertical aerosol distribution responsible for the latitudinal bands and albedo features seen on Uranus and Neptune. We match the filter choices first with those used for past HST observations (F791W, F953N, and the 619-nm methane band filter FQCH4N15), and then with past ground-based observations (F467M and F547M corresponding to Stromgren b and y respectively). We also select F673N as a nearby continuum comparison to 619 nm. The filters sample a wide range of methane absorption coefficients, which translates into probes of a wide range of depths in the atmosphere. (This is the primary reason for preferring WFPC2 to ACS, which lacks methane band filters usable in Snapshot observations. The 619-nm methane band filter, in particular, is critical for unambiguous determination of the vertical distribution of clouds and aerosols in the tropospheres of Uranus and Neptune.) F791W has previously displayed structure within Uranus' southern polar cap more clearly than any other filter (Including F850LP). Since all six filters will not fit into a single 30-minute Snapshot observing period, we split visits to each planet into two separate groups--a blue filter group and a (mostly) red filter group for Uranus and a short exposure group vs. a long exposure group for Neptune. We are requesting five visits in each of these groups spaced at intervals of 1-2 months throughout the portion of Cycle 13 outside each planet's solar exclusion window--20 visits in all.
