Abstract The massive black hole Sgr A* at the Galactic center has recently shown not only quiescent emission at near-IR wavelengths, but also flare activity with quasi- periodicity of 17 minutes. Our research group has been granted two blocks of observing time with XMM-Newton to monitor the spectral and temporal properties of Sgr A*. Simultaneously with these X-ray observations, we will also monitor Sgr A* at radio, submillimeter, near-IR, and gamma-ray wavelengths. We propose to use NICMOS in parallel with the XMM observations to provide evidence of a well-defined minimum periodicity in the spectrum of flare periodicities. This, combined with periodicity in the near-IR line emission, would strengthen the claim that the emitting gas resides at the innermost stable circular orbit around the GC black hole, thus measuring the spin parameter of a massive black hole. Current groundbased near-IR data suggest a spin parameter of ~0.5. In addition, the correlation pattern of emission over a wide spectrum would elucidate a key issue of how to explain the low luminosity of Sgr A*. The NICMOS on HST is the only instrument that can accurately measure the 17 minute quasi-periodic variability of Sgr A* because of the long time baseline over which HST can observe Sgr A* in parallel with XMM-Newton. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10179( 3) - 06/10/04 07:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ NICMOS camera 1 will be used to monitor the near-IR flux of the black hole at the Galactic Center, Sgr-A*, simultaneously with XMM observations scheduled in 2 38-hour long observing windows. Our total observing time allocation of 32 orbits will be evenly split into 16 orbits within each of the two XMM observing windows. We have constructed our visits to use a 4-position NIC-SPIRAL-DITH dither pattern, with the 4 positions being spread across 2 contiguous orbits. We will therefore have a total of 8 visits (16 orbits) in each XMM observing time window, for a total of 16 visits (32 orbits). Each orbit will consist of 2 cycles of exposures in each of the F160W, F187N, and F190N filters. This choice of filters will provide us with H-band (F160W) data to complement ground-based observations, Paschen-alpha (F187N) emission line monitoring, as well as narrow-band continuum (F190N) monitoring. We wish to have as many of the visits scheduled contiguously as possible, in order to fully sample the time-dependent variability of Sgr-A*.
