Abstract We will obtain deep, panchromatic imaging photometry of stellar populations in four fields ranging from 0.5 to 4 scale lengths across the disk of the Local Group spiral M33. The observations are designed to detect the oldest main-sequence turnoffs in three outer disk fields, and to reach the crowding limit in the innermost field. We will combine the photometry data with information we already have in-hand on abundances from stars and H II regions in M33 to derive the star formation history and metallicity evolution of the M33 disk. The information from our four fields will allow us to obtain (1) the ages of the oldest disk stars and the radial variation of their ages; (2) the radial variation of the star formation history and its nature (e.g., constant, declining, or bursting); and (3) the metallicity distribution in each field and the time evolution of the metallicity gradient. Our team, an experienced mix of photometrists, spectroscopists, and galaxy evolution theorists, will use the results from this program to construct a comprehensive chemo-dynamical model for the M33 disk. This detailed study of M33 will be a key in developing an understanding of the formation and evolution of disks that can be applied to studies of disks at both low and high redshift, and will also yield a wealth of information on stellar populations, chemical evolution, and star clusters that will be of great value to future investigators. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10190( 5) - 07/19/04 10:38 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We want to sample a range of radii in M33 to study population gradients. To minimize the effects of extinction, we choose the brightest and most uniform areas between spiral arms by inspection of deep images. Fields along the major axis were chosen to minimize radial spread within each field. We have chosen fields at radii corresponding to approximately 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 and 4.0 scalelengths, motivated by the desire to sample primarily the disk population. In M33, the fields are at 230, 650, 1100, and 1700 arcseconds from the center, corresponding to a radial span of approximately 900 pc out to 6.5 kpc (Figure 1). The ACS field covers a region 800 pc on a side. The chosen fields are all located on the southern side of M33 because the more regular spiral arm structure allows us to avoid younger associations. We intentionally avoid OB associations and H~II regions because the very recent star formation history has already been studied with shallower observations. Ideally, we want to measure brightnesses and colors of stars down to the oldest main sequence turnoff at $V\sim 28.5$. However, this is possible only in regions of surface brightness fainter than $V\sim 22.5$ mag/square arcsec, as demonstrated in the simulations below; at higher surface brightness, crowding limits the photometry. We propose very deep observations in three disk fields outside of the crowding limit, and shallower observations in an additional field near the center of M33. Four fields across a range of galactocentric radii are required to sample enough of the disk to understand gradients, and to reduce biases introduced by peculiarities in any single field. We want three deep fields to measure adequately any gradient in the ages of the oldest stars. We propose six-color observations using the instrument/filter/exposure combinations: \begin{itemize} \item Very deep ACS F606W and F814W observations to reach the oldest main sequence turnoff in three disk fields; these comprise the bulk of our proposal. Shallower observations in the inner field will provide quality photometry down to the crowding limit. The WFC is chosen to provide the maximum number of stars, minimizing statistical errors in the derived SFH. In the innermost field, the fainter stars are crowded beyond the ability of HST to resolve them, so using the higher-resolution HRC will not improve our ability to detect the oldest turnoffs. In addition, we require a uniform filter/detector set across all fields to minimize calibration uncertainties. \item ACS F475W measurements to insure the ability to detect horizontal branch stars, especially in the inner fields where the F606W/F814W exposures are not so deep. \item WFPC2 F300W observations to measure reddening towards individual blue upper main sequence stars. WFPC2 is chosen because the field size is larger than the HRC of ACS (ACS/WFC does not have near-UV capability), and because we only need to measure the brighter stars. \item NICMOS F110M and F222M observations to measure colors of upper giant branch and AGB stars. IR colors are needed to study metal-rich giants and to minimize effects of differential reddening. NIC2 will be the primary camera in the inner fields as we think it is the best compromise between resolution and field size, but we will get NIC1 observations simultaneously to check crowding effects. NIC3 will be used in the outer fields where a larger field size is required to sample enough stars and where crowding is not so severe. For all filters, CR-splits will be obtained; for the deep and near-IR images, dithering will be used to obtain better sampling of the PSF for more accurate photometry. Exposure times were estimated using the instrument Exposure Time Calculators: For the deep ACS observations, we wish to observe the oldest main sequence turnoff at $V\sim 10190( 5) - 07/19/04 10:38 - [ 3] 28.5$ with $S/N\sim 10$. The ACS ETC suggests that this can be done with exposures $\sim$ 27500s in F606W and $\sim$ 33000s in F814W. In more crowded regions, crowding prevents observations of such faint stars regardless of the exposure time, but we still wish to observe the horizontal branch/red clump at high accuracy, and target $S/N > 50$ at $V\sim 25$. For blue stars, this gives exposure times of $>2500$s in F606W and $>8200$s in F814W, but for red stars, we only require $\sim$ 1200s in F814W. Hence, to improve efficiency, we do not request long exposures in F814W in the inner regions, but instead add exposures in F475W; the ETC suggests we can reach $S/N\sim 50$ in F475W in 2600s for a blue HB star. The addition of this filter \textit{reduces} our total request while at the same time providing more color information to decouple the effects of age, metallicity, and reddening. For the near-UV WFPC2 observations we need photometry of main sequence stars down to the level of the horizontal branch; the ETC suggests we can obtain $S/N\sim 10$ at this brightness with an exposure time of $\sim$ 5500s in F300W. For the NICMOS observations, we wish to obtain accurate photometry several magnitudes down from the RGB tip, at $K\sim 16.7$. We propose to get S/N$\sim$ 30 in F110W to 4 magnitudes below the tip to measure an accurate luminosity function. For metallicities, we propose to measure colors of giants within 2.5 magnitudes of the tip. These goals are motivated by the experience of Stephens \& Frogel (2002) in interpreting previous NICMOS observations of the center of M33. Based on this experience and the ETC, we require $\sim$ 1800s in F110W and $\sim$ 3600s in F222M. To demonstrate that we can do the photometry at the required accuracy, we have made simulations of the M33 disk. We assumed a constant star formation rate over a Hubble time, and used isochrones to create lists of colors and brightnesses of stars down to $V\sim 30$ for various different observed surface brightnesses. We assumed a distance modulus $m-M=24.55$ for the simulations, and used the TinyTim software to generate realistic scenes for the ACS observations, including all known PSF effects and geometric distortion. Noise was added appropriate to exposure times of 16000s in F606W and F814W (somewhat shallower than proposed above). We simulated 30 by 30 arcsecond regions rather than the actual ACS 200 by 200, so there will be almost 45 times more stars in the real data than in these simulations. We performed stellar photometry using techniques that have been developed by the PI for crowded field stellar photometry. We convert exposure times to orbits using a total orbit length of 54 minutes at the declination of M33, a guide star acquisition time of 6 minutes with reacquisitions of 5 minutes, and overheads of 4 minutes per ACS exposure, 3 minutes per WFPC2 exposure, and $\sim$ 1 minute per NICMOS exposure. Combining all of the above yields: \begin{itemize} \item In each of three outer fields in M33, 9 orbits in ACS/F606W, 11 orbits in ACS/F814W, 1 orbit in ACS/F475W, 2 orbits in WFPC2/F300W, and 2 orbits (combined) for NIC3/F110M and F222M, 25 total orbits per field, 75 orbits overall \item In the inner field in M33, 3 orbits in ACS/F606W, 3 orbits in ACS/F814W, 1 orbit in ACS/F475W, 2 orbits in WFPC2/F300W, and 2 orbits (combined) for NIC2/F110M and F222M, 11 total orbits \end{itemize} Given the extent of M33, we request coordinated parallel observations for all of our primary observations. This will allow us to cover larger regions in M33, albeit not with the full panchromatic coverage. In principle, it is possible to have parallel observations from two different instruments overlap with appropriate constraints on roll angles; we will request this if it does not constrain scheduling too badly. ACS parallels during the WFPC2/NICMOS observations will provide moderately deep visible observations in adjacent fields.
