Abstract The observed optical depths to microlensing of stars in the Galactic bulge are difficult to reconcile with our present understanding of Galactic dynamics. The main source of uncertainty in those comparisons is now shifting from microlensing measurements to the dynamical models of the Galactic bar. We propose to constrain the Galactic bar models with proper motion observations of Bulge stars that underwent microlensing by determining both the kinematic identity of the microlensed sources and the importance of streaming motions. The lensed stars are typically farther than randomly selected stars. Therefore, our proper motion determinations for 36 targeted MACHO events will provide valuable constraints on the dynamics of bulge stars as a function of distance. The first epoch data for our proposed events is already available in the HST archive so the project can be completed within a single HST cycle. The exceptional spatial resolution of HST is essential for completion of the project. Constraints on the total mass in the bulge will ultimately lead to the determination of the amount of dark matter in inner Galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10198( 2) - 05/13/04 06:48 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is to measure proper motions of 36 stars in the Galactic Bulge known to have been microlensed and reported as events by the MACHO collaboration. As the first epoch data we will use the existing archival HST images of those fields. Therefore, all duplications in the HST archive are a vital part of our study. The purpose of this observing run is to obtain the second epoch data. For each of our 36 fields we plan to obtain a single high quality ACS/HRC image using F814W filter. To ensure that our precise proper motion measurements are not compromised by cosmic rays and hot pixels we combine a four point dithering pattern (~ 20 pixel offsets) with the default two-fold cosmic ray split. The coordinates for all our targets are known to 1 arc second or better and their magnitudes span the range 16.4-21.0 in V. Using observed V-R colors of our targets and reference stellar spectra of Kurucz, we estimated required exposure times. Our goal is to have the new observations roughly match the S/N of the archival WFPC2/PC1 images of the same fields, while taking advantage of the fact that ACS/HRC CCD has larger dynamic range than WFPC2/PC1. This will ensure that many of the same stars are available to construct a frame of reference for comparisons between the two epochs. Observations of all targets (with the corresponding overheads) fit within a single orbit, and in almost all cases they require only a short target visibility time.
