Abstract Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph is the most sophisticated space-borne spectrometer ever built, probably the last of its kind for some time to come. A key virtue of STIS is that its medium- and high-resolution echelle modes provide access to broad intervals of the vacuum ultraviolet spectrum in a single shot. Another virtue is the validation of the wavelength scales by periodic observations of an onboard hollow-cathode emission line source. Tying together the different echelle orders by means of the accurately known lamp spectrum enables a wide range of studies that exploit differential comparisons of velocity diagnostics in stellar, interstellar, and even extragalactic spectra. Despite the importance of the wavelength calibrations, however, they are done only infrequently (once a year). While STIS undoubtedly must be one of the most stable orbiting spectrographs ever designed, possible thermal distortions of the instrument might cause small nonlinear deviations of the wavelength scales and thereby impact the velocity precision. The existing wavecal data sets are separated too far apart in time to isolate short-term thermal fluctuations from long-term secular behavior, and the routine WAVELINEs taken with every grating switch are too underexposed to reveal any differential behavior across the spectrum, aside from a simple zero-point offset. I therefore propose to obtain a series of deep lamp exposures in a few representative modes of the NUV and FUV MAMAs to search for and characterize short-term differential distortions of the echelle formats. This work also will provide an important dataset to test new approaches to derive the basic dispersion relations, such as the effort underway by the Physical Modeling Group at ESA's ST-ECF. The calibration campaign can be scheduled in pure parallel mode with no loss of orbits from the Cycle 13 science program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10203( 6) - 10/07/04 11:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ I have chosen three representative echelle modes--E140M/1425, E140H/1416, and E230H/2762--for the tests. The H modes are better for measuring small velocity effects because they have higher dispersions and thus larger pixel shifts for a given wavelength deviation. Nevertheless, the M echelles have much higher spatial line densities, and in any event E140M is a very heavily used mode, and thus deserves a close look. This set is the minimum needed to check various aspects such as medium-res vs. high-res, and FUV vs. NUV MAMAs, and is consistent with the Project's desire not to overuse the lamps. All three of the selected modes have adequate line densities and the E140H setting overlaps with the central portion of E140M, so the behavior of the same spectral features can be assessed. Standard exposure times are cited in the "User Wavecal" section of the STIS Phase II special instructions, which also are the ones used in the annual dispersion relation campaigns (during which the large number of standard observing settings of each echelle mode are exercised). However, I propose to increase the standard TEXP of 266 s for E140H/1416 to 660 s to better match the S/N obtained with the other settings; keep E140M at its normal 660 s; but reduce E230H/2762 from 457 s to 200 s since the nominal exposure already is very deep. Peak pixel emission line intensities are 1 cps for E140M/H, and 8 cps for E230H, so there is no danger of violating MAMA overlight limits. One difference with the usual dispersion relation calibrations is that I will take the normal "WAVE" that usually accompanies any movement of the Mode Selection Mechanism (MSM) to a new grating position. The WAVE is a short exposure (20 s) of the cal-lamp to verify the positioning of the MSM and compensate for any global zero-point shifts in the wavelength scales due to thermal flexing. Only a few bright lines are recorded reliably in the short exposures, so they are useful only for characterizing the linear term in the thermal shifts, not the differential behavior over the full format. Nevertheless, including the normal WAVE allows the subsequent deeper LAMP exposure to be treated exactly like a standard science observation in the CAL/STIS pipeline, and thus provides the most realistic test of the processing system, and any enhancements that might be forthcoming, for example from the ST-ECF efforts. I propose a hierarchical strategy to sample a range of timescales up to the yearly one already represented by the annual calibration program, and provide good statistics to reveal any systematic effects: daily observations for a week; weekly observations for a month; and monthy observations for the year. However, the observations can be scheduled in what amounts to "pure parallel mode, " during times when STIS is available (outside SAA constraints) but another of the HST instruments is being used.
