Abstract There is increasing speculation that activity-induced outflows are an important feedback mechanism in evolution of galaxy bulges, yet uncertainties remain about the nature, dominant driving mechanism and powers of the outflows. In order to address these issues, we propose to make deep ACS and STIS observations of two compact radio sources in which we recently found unequivocal evidence for powerful emission line outflows, and in which all the potential drivers for the outflows -- quasar nuclei, relativistic jets and starbursts -- are known to be present. Using the unique capabilities of HST/ACS we will map the outflow regions in these sources at high spatial resolution and thereby determine the dominant outflow driving mechanism. In addition, by combining the morphological information from the ACS data with information on the kinematics and physical conditions derived from STIS and ground- based spectra, we will determine the mass outflow rates and powers in the outflows. This will be the first comprehensive study of the near-nuclear outflows in radio galaxies. Such studies are crucial for determining whether the activity associated with powerful extragalactic radio sources has a major impact on the evolution of the host early-type galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10206( 3) - 05/13/04 08:47 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The purpose of the proposed observations is to undertake imaging and spectroscopy observations of two compact radio sources in order to investigate the activity-driven outflows and determine the main outflow driving mechanism. It has three main parts: 1. High resolution [OIII] imaging of the high ionization outflow regions using the HRC with F550M (for [OIII]) and FR459M (for nearby continuum). This part of the programme aims to obtain the highest spatial resolution attainable with the HST at the observation wavelengths. (2 orbits per object) 2.Moderately high resolution Halpha+[NII] imaging of the low ionization haloes in the host galaxies using the WFC with FR647M (for both line and nearby continuum). This part of the programme with achieve a spatial resolution of ~0.1 arcseconds, which is adequate for mapping the low ionization haloes in the central regions of the galaxies. (In the original application it was proposed to map the low ionization halo using the HRC to observe [OII], but subsequently it was decided that observing Halpha+[NII] with the WRC would be a better option, both in terms of the S/N and spatial resolution -- this change has been approved by the TTRB) (1 orbit per object) 3. STIS spectroscopy of the outflow region in order to map the kinematics, ionization and physical conditions in the outflows regions. (2 orbits per object) ** Note that the imaging observations must be completed early in the cycle, in order to determine the slit position angles and optimise the acquisition strategy for the subsequent spectroscopy observations. ** I will now decsribe each part of the programme in detail. 1. [OIII] imaging. This invoves using the the HRC with the F550M and FR459M filters to image the two galaxies in the light of [OIII] and a nearby blueward continuum region centred at 4540A (one orbit for each filter and each object). We will use a four point dither pattern to achieve a well-sampled PSF, and remove both cosmic rays and hot pixels (the instrument handbook says that no cr-split is necessary for such a dither pattern). For our estimated line and continuum surface brightnesses and ~2400s total exposure times we will achieve a S/N> 35 per resolution element in the [OIII] images and a S/N > 10 in the associated continuum line images (using the latest versions of the ACS ECT). 2. Halpha+[NII] imaging. This invoves using the WFC with the FR647M ramp filter to image both galaxies in the light of Halpha+[NII] and a blueward continuum bin centred at 5900A. We will use a four point dither patter pattern to improve the sampling of the PSF, remove cosmic rays and hot pixels. We estimate that we will achieve a S/N > 15 per resolution element for both the Halpha+[NII] and associated continuum images, assuming exposure times of ~1000s for each wavelength. Note that, in order to avoid excessive buffer dumps and fit these observations into one orbit for each object, we have defined WFC sub- arrays to cover the inner ramp sub-apertures appropriate to the filter/wavelengths being used. 3. STIS spectroscopic observations. These will use the 750L grating with the 52x0.1 arcsecond slit to cover redshifted [OIII] and Halpha+[NII] emission lines at ~10A resolution. In ~4000s total exposure time we will achieve S/N > 20 per resolution element for the brighter emission lines. An acquisition peakup will be used to centre the slit on the target. The target will be placed in an aperture towards the edge of the array in order to avoid excessive CTE losses for these relatively faint sources. The object will be dithered along the slit in order to improve sampling of the PSF and allow removal of hot pixels. ** Note that exact slit position angle and acquisition strategy will need to be refined following the imaging observations; the orient and peakup parameters entered in the current APT phase II submission are merely 10206( 3) -
