Abstract We propose to use the differential spectral imaging capability of HST/NICMOS (NIC1) to search for planetary mass companions. We target the twelve most nearby (within 30 pc), isolated (no known close companion), and young (< 1Gyr) brown dwarfs. All of them have spectral type L and show signs of Lithium absorption, which clearly proves their substellar nature and youth. Planetary mass companions with masses down to 6 Jupiter masses, and at separations larger than 3 A.U. are bright enough for a direct detection with HST/NICMOS using the spectral differential imaging technique in two narrow-band filters placed on and off molecular bands. The proposed project has the potential to lead to the first direct detection of a planetary mass object in orbit around a nearby brown dwarf. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10208( 4) - 08/12/04 10:07 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Observations will be performed with NICMOS (NIC1). Science targets will be first placed on the lower right quadrant of NIC1, and then on the upper right quadrant of NIC1 using POS TARG. The 2-point dither is required to optimize PSF sampling, to effectively reject any bad or hot pixel which might fall close to our science target, and in order to gain redundancy against cosmic ray events. Observations will be obtained with F108N and F113N. Simulations with the NICMOS ETC indicate that effective exposure times of approx 2400s in each band are needed in order to achieve the required S/N of around 6 to 8 for a limiting magnitude of J=20mag, a brightness difference of 6mag, and a separation of 0.3''. Hence two orbits are required per visit. In order to limit the effect of HST breathing, differential imaging observations (i.e. observations both in F108N and F113N) will be obtained in each orbit. All objects with the exception of 2MASSJ05591914-1404488 have also been indentified in DSS2 IR, and their coordinates and proper motions have been verified. Because of the relatively high proper motions of the targets, and the fact that some of the DSS2 plates date back to 1985, the more current 2MASS coordinates are used. Some of the objects like, e.g., Kelu 1, have already previously been observed with NIC1.
