Abstract The masses of the giant black holes in galaxies are correlated with the luminosities, masses, and velocity dispersions of their host spheroids. This empirical connection of phenomena on widely different scales (from sub-parsec to kiloparsec) suggests that the evolution of a galaxy and its central black hole are closely linked. We propose to test various unified formation models, by measuring the cosmic evolution of the black hole/spheroid relations, back to z=0.37 (a lookback time of 4 Gyrs). We will obtain 1-orbit ACS images of a sample of 20 Seyfert 1 galaxies, for which we already have extensive new ground-based measures of the black hole masses and the stellar velocity dispersions. HST resolution is required for accurate measurement of the nonstellar AGN continuum, and the luminosity and effective radius of the bulge of each host galaxy. This will complete the set of observables needed to map the co-evolution of spheroids and black-holes. The proposed sample is the minimum required to make the first measure of the black hole mass/bulge correlation and of the fundamental plane for active galaxies outside the local Universe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10216( 6) - 08/11/04 09:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is provide high resolution photometry of a sample of 20 Seyfert 1s at z~0.37 for which central black hole masses and bulge velocity dispersions are already being obtained from the ground. We need precision measurements of the luminosity of the bulge and the central point source (<0.2 mags of uncertainty), in order to construct the first BHL relationship beyond the local Universe. We will also derive effective radii (Re) and effective surface brightnesses (SBe) for the bulges, in order to derive its dynamical mass (\propto \sigma^2 Re) and the evolution of the stellar population, from the evolution of the Fundamental Plane (requiring SBe, Re, and \sigma). None of these quantities could be derived from ground based data, and none of these objects are suitable for AO. The final sample has been carefully selected from the Sloan images and spectra of Seyfert 1s at the appropriate redshift, to span a broad range of luminosities (and hence provide dynamical range for the BHL relation). We have discarded spectra with very strong Fe II emission or too overwhelming nonstellar continuumn, which would have prevented velocity dispersion measurements of the starlight. As shown by the simulations in Figure 1, twenty objects is the minimal sample required to detect cosmic evolution in the BHL and FP relationship convincingly. Since we need to determine both the bulge and AGN contributions to the continuum light, we select a red filter, which excludes bright emission lines. The F775W filter (hereafter I) is perfectly suited for these observations. Its blue and red cutoffs at 7000\AA and 8600\AA exclude the strong Hbeta, [OIII] and Halpha emissions (respectively at 6600\AA, 6800\AA and 9000\AA in the observer's frame), while including the 5100\AA continuum, which is used to estimate the size of the broad line region with the photoionization method. Furthermore, at z~0.37, F775W samples the V- band rest frame and therefore accurate V band magnitudes can be obtained with minimal filter/K-corrections, independent of the intrinsic color of the various components, to a level of a few hundredths of magnitude. A broader filter like F814W would be somewhat faster (1.4 times), but would include Halpha, thus reducing the overall accuracy of the photometry on the continuum. WFC is the camera of choice, providing superior sensitivity to the HRC at the low surface brightness levels needed to do bulge/disk decomposition. The full PSF sampling will be recovered by obtaining 4 dithered exposures with semi-integer pixel offsets. This will also enable robust cosmic ray removal. Note that the contrast between the central point sources and the host galaxy in our sample is far more favorable than in other HST studies of AGN host galaxies (e.g. Bahcall et al. 1997, ApJ, 479, 642; Scarpa et al. 2000, ApJ, 532, 740; Barth, Ho \& Sargent 2003; Hamilton, Casertano \& Turnshek 2002, ApJ, 576, 61; Dunlop et al. 2003, MNRAS, 340, 1095), so that the modelling of the wings of the PSF is not as crucial to obtain accurate parameters for the host galaxy. The depth of the observations is dictated by the need to obtain accurate photometry for the central point source and the bulge (<0.2 mags uncertainty), as well as accurate structural parameters. The luminosity of the central point source is expected to be in the range I=19--22, based on the total luminosity of the galaxies and typical AGN contribution to the 5000\AA\, continuum of 20-50\% (e.g. Malkan & Filippenko 1983, ApJ, 275, 477; Hunt, Malkan, et al. 1999, ApJ, 510, 637), corresponding to absolute magnitudes MV between -19 and-22. Similarly, based on the expected evolution of the FP and the available luminosities and velocity dispersion, we expect effective surface brightnesses and radii in the range SBe, F775=18--21 mag arcsec^{-2} and 0"5-1"5 respectively. This corresponds to 10216( 6) - 08/11/04 09:52 - [ 3] a surface brightness at the effective radius of 19.4-22.4 mag arcsec^{-2}. Based on our previous extensive experience with structural parameters of distant bulges and AGN, to perform these measurements we need a 5\sigma detection per WFPC2 equivalent pixel at the effective radius (e.g., Hunt et al 1999 ApJS 125, 349). According to the ACS ETC this is achieved in 2300s integration time, i.e. one orbit per pointing, assuming 4 exposures per pointing and related overhead. The same exposures will yield extremely high signal-to-noise ratio detection (SNR>200) of the central point source, allowing for accurate determination of its luminosity, and the wings of the PSF. Roughly speaking, we are making the same analysis of Sy 1 galaxies that we have already done routinely with ground-based imaging. Except in this case we require HST resolution, since the Sy 1's are about 10 times further away. We note that the parameters that enter the Fundamental Plane, SBe and Re are correlated, so that the combination that enters the FP (\log Re-0.33 SBe) can be measured with high precision (r.m.s. 0.03, Treu et al.\ 2001).
