PI: Dr. Paul Kalas University of California - Berkeley CoI: Dr. James R. Graham University of California - Berkeley N CoI: Dr. Brenda Matthews University of California - Berkeley N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Abstract We propose to conduct a comprehensive high angular resolution study of the newly discovered debris disk around GJ 803. This nearby, young star has an estimated age of 8-20 Myr, a critical epoch in disk evolution and planet formation. By virtue of its proximity (10 pc) and nearly edge-on orientation, GJ 803's disk has an exceptional surface brightness and angular size relative to other disks resolved in scattered light thus far. Hence, this system offers an exciting new opportunity to study debris disks. Our proposed ACS and NICMOS imaging will elucidate the disk morphology, ascertain the grain properties as a function of radius, and search for fine dynamical structure indicative of the presence of planets. ACS WFC and NICMOS coronagraphic imaging will explore the inner disk, which includes the ~17 AU inner disk hole inferred from the star's spectral energy distribution. Complementary ACS WFC imaging will probe the outer disk (>70 AU); at such large distances around GJ 803, dust evolutionary timescales are longer than the stellar age, and hence we can study the composition of primordial circumstellar material. The combined dataset will provide the most comprehensive study to date of a debris disk from ~7 AU to ~200 AU radius. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10228( 10) - 07/13/04 15:56 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This is a multi-color imaging study of faint, extended nebulosity around the star GJ 803. We utilize the ACS WFC, the ACS HRC coronagraph, and the NICMOS NIC2 coronagraph. To achieve high contrast, we roll the telescope for each instrument-filter combination used, and observe PSF reference stars (except in the case of the ACS WFC observations). For clarity, the Visits have the following numbering: 01, 02, 03...etc for ACS WFC imaging 11, 12, 13...etc for ACS HRC coronagraphic imaging with a polarizer 21, 22, 23...etc for NICMOS NIC2 coronagraphic imaging in epoch 1 51, 52, 53...etc for NICMOS NIC2 coronagraphic imaging in epoch 2 Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- GJ 803 is a variable star, with a period of 4.865 days and a V-band variation of 0.15 magnitude. It is also a flare star, which could lead to stronger variations on timescales of minutes and hours. Our goal is to obtain reliable color information using the ACS WFC, ACS HRC, and NICMOS NIC2. This goal would be diminished if the star is observed at different epochs with different cameras since the star will have different photometric properties. We have asked for several grouping constraints such that the data are taken as close to the same epoch as possible. Ideally, these data are also obtained within 24 hours of the GTO observations by Holland Ford with the ACS HRC and any NICMOS observations in program 10176 (PI: SONG). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10228( 10) - 07/13/04 15:56 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 GJ803 EXT-STAR, M V-IV, DISK RA=20H45M9.56S +/- 0.1", DEC=- J2000 V = 8.61+/-0.05 31D20'27.57" +/- 0.1" Coordinate Source: PPM_STAR_CATALOGUE Comments: GJ 803 is a variable star, with a period of 4.865 days and a V-band variation of 0.15 magnitude. Please note that the ideal scheduling of these orbits is in a consecutive group of six orbits. If this cannot be scheduled, then Visits 05 and 06 could be separated from Visit01-04 by a few orbits interval, if necessary, and certainly with the minimum gap that can be supported. The reason is that the image of the star in all six orbits will be combined to create a median PSF that can be used to subtract the PSF in each individual image frame. Because the PSF structure changes with time, we prefer if all six orbits are scheduled together. Visits 21 and 22 execute within a single orbit, with approx. 30 degree roll in between the two visits. The ORIENT constraints are designed to keep the GJ 803 circumstellar disk away from the diffraction spikes. The NW side of the disk will be pointing "down" (-Y) on NIC2, which enables scheduling during a 5- day window in July. The only other window is in June, which would require having the NW side of the disk lie horizontally in the +X direction. Since Cycle 13 begins in July 2004, we prefer to have the earliest opportunity to obtain these data. The PSF reference star, GJ784, does not have any ORIENT constraints. As usual for coronagraphic observations, the PSF must be as stable as possible and therefore we have asked for the GROUP WITHIN and SEQUENCE constraints. The GROUP WITHIN 1 orbit is to make sure two visits comprising a coronagraphic roll are executed within the same orbit. The SEQUENCE constraint is used to execute all the NICMOS observations of this science target and the PSF template star within a single epoch. The science target is a variable star with a period of 4.865 days. Therefore we would like as closely spaced observations as possible. If this creates scheduling problems, Visits 21-25 can be separated from Visits 26-28 by a few hours. The observing sequence in each Visit requires target acquisition, followed by coronagraphic observations in various filters, followed by a direct imaging of the star after offseting away from the occulting spot. Please note that a possible diagnostic in Visit 21 seems to be due to the Sequence Requirement. If one deletes the number 3.0 and re-enters it, the diagnostic goes away. Visits 51 and 52 execute within a single orbit, with approx. 30 degree roll in between the two visits. The ORIENT constraints are designed to keep the GJ 803 circumstellar disk away from the diffraction spikes. The SE side of the disk will be pointing "down" (-Y) on NIC2, which enables scheduling during a 5- day window in July. The observing sequence in each Visit requires target acquisition, followed by coronagraphic observations in various filters, followed by a direct imaging of the star after offseting away from the occulting spot. If the lamp-on and lamp-off flatfield mode is NOT supported for this period remove the last two exposures with lamp-on and lamp-off. We understand that we wish to obtain 7K-12K cts for the lamp-on observations. These lamp-on count rate with F204M is 177 cts/second. Therefore, we schedule integration times of 50-60 seconds. We use the ACCUM mode. Please advise whether or not MULTIACCUM is preferred.
