Abstract The distribution of dark vs. luminous matter on scales of 0.1-1.0 Mpc remains poorly understood. For a nearby group, the total mass can be determined from the radius of "the zero-velocity surface", which separates the group from the general Hubble flow. This new method requires the measurement of accurate distances and radial velocities of galaxies around the group, but gives total mass estimates independent of assumptions about the state of relaxation or orbital characteristics. The mass pertains to the group at the full scale to which it is bound. Upon application in several nearest groups, the method yields mass estimates in agreement with the sum of the virial masses of subcomponents. However, the typical total M/L ratio for the nearby groups of ~30 Mo/Lo implies a local mean density of matter which is only 1/7 the canonical global density . The nearby complex of galaxies around Cen A and M83 resembles our Local Group by the dumb-bell concentration of objects around a pair of dominant galaxies. Accurate distances have been acquired recently for ~20 group members by the TRGB method using HST. We will measure TRGB distances to the 17 remaining galaxies in the region. These observations will constrain the dynamical state of the halo surrounding the nearest giant E-galaxy Cen A, providing a comparison with the halos of the nearest spirals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10235( 4) - 08/09/04 11:06 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Judging from galaxy coordinates, radial velocities and morphology, 56 galaxies can be ascribed to the CenA+M83 complex. Twenty five of them, predominantly of very low surface brightness, have been discovered in the recent surveys by Karachentsev and Karachentseva (n=21) and by the HIPASS team (n=4). Only two of the complex members, NGC 5236 (M83) and NGC 5253, have distances measured via the luminosity of cepheids. For 19 CenA+M83 galaxies, the distances have been determined by the TRGB method with an accuracy of ~ 10%. All TRGB distances, apart from NGC 5128, were measured in the course of snapshot surveys (prop. 8192 and 8601) with the WFPC2. Another 5 galaxies in the complex are not included in our list because they have now been observed with the WFPC2 or the ACS although this data has not yet been analyzed. We exclude from our program 13 probable dwarf spheroidal members of the CenA+M83 group which so far are without measured radial velocities. Therefore, to get a complete sample of CenA+M83 members with known distances and radial velocities, we need distance measurements for 17 more galaxies. All of these 17 remaining galaxies are listed as targets in our proposal for Cycle 13. Our candidates are relatively easy targets for single orbit TRGB studies with ACS. We chose to have two 600 second exposures in F606W followed by two 450 second exposures in F814W. In an old stellar population characteristic of a dwarf spheroidal, the tip of the giant branch will be at M_I = -4.0, M_V = -2.5 (Da Costa and Armandroff 1990, AJ, 100, 162). To look for dwarf galaxies out to (m-M)_o = 28.5 (members of the M83 group), we need to detect stars with I=25.0 and V=26.5 with a signal-to- noise ratio S/N=10. The ACS Exposure Time Calculator predicts that in 2x(600 - 450) seconds we will exceed S/N of 10 in both filters at the above limits, so our goal is easily reached. F606W is used instead of F555W because of greater sensitivity, although it is wider than Johnson V. The majority of the galaxies are smaller than 3 arc-minute in size and will fit comfortably within the ACS/WFC field of view. For the reductions we will use a photometry pipeline dedicated to ACS/WFC data which is based on the HST software developed by Co-I Andy Dolphin to do stellar photometry in crowded fields with WFPC2 (Dolphin 2000, PASP, 112, 1383). A second work by Dolphin (2000, PASP, 112, 1397) dealt with CTE and calibration of the F606W filter for WFPC2. Similar attention to detail will be given to ACS analysis. We usually produce a color-magnitude diagram of a galaxy within one day of the data being delivered from the archive.
