Abstract Hundreds of orbits of HST time have been devoted to measurements of the masses of black holes in the centers of nearby galaxies, using the kinematics of either stars or ionized gas disks. Gas-dynamical measurements are far simpler in terms of observations and analysis, but are subject to systematic uncertainties since the gas disks may not be rotating at the local circular velocity. Cross-checks between the two methods are critically important, but to date there has not been any direct test of the two methods to determine whether they would give consistent results for the same galaxy. We propose to compare stellar-dynamical and gas-dynamical measurements of the black hole masses in two S0 galaxies, NGC 3245 and NGC 1380, that we have selected as excellent candidates for both techniques. This direct comparison will help to clarify the amount of intrinsic scatter in the black hole mass vs. stellar velocity dispersion correlation and improve our understanding of local black hole demographics. For NGC 3245 we have already performed the gas-dynamical measurement. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10240( 3) - 05/17/04 11:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our observing program has the following components: ACS/HRC imaging of NGC1380. We will obtain broad-band images in F555W and F814W, and narrow-band images using the FR656N filter. The central wavelength for the ramp filter observation should be 6604 A, which is where redshifted H-alpha will appear. STIS spectroscopy of NGC1380 for stellar dynamics: We have 8 orbits for this observation, which we will split into two identical 4-orbit visits. We request that the slit orientation be within +/-10 degrees of the major axis of the galaxy. We will use the G750M grating at central wavelength 8561 A, and obtain fringe flats at the end of each orbit. We will use the 52X0.1E1 aperture to minimize CTE losses. Both visits should have the same slit orientation. We will dither along the slit direction to assist in CR and bad pixel rejection. STIS spectroscopy of NGC1380 for gas dynamics: We have 4 orbits for this observation, which will be done with G750M at 6581 A and 52X0.1E1. The slit orientation should be within +/-10 degrees of the galaxy major axis. We will observe at 3 parallel slit positions, with the first position centered on the nucleus, and the other two positions offset by +/-0.1 arcsec perpendicular to the slit length. At each slit position we will dither along the slit for CR and bad pixel rejection. All STIS visits for NGC1380 should be placed on hold until after the ACS visit, so that we can use the ACS imaging data to measure the nuclear coordinates and magnitude, and optimize the STIS peakups. STIS spectroscopy of NGC3245 for stellar dynamics: we have 8 orbits for this observation, which will be split into two visits. These exposures will use G750M at 8561 A and 52X01E1, and we will obtain a fringe flat exposure at the end of each orbit. The slit orientation should be within +/-20 degrees of the galaxy major axis, and both visits should have the same orientation. The plan is the same s for the NGC1380 stellar-dynamics observation except for one detail. We need to obtain a brief NICMOS NIC2/F160W exposure of the galaxy. During the last orbit of the second STIS visit, we will offset the elescope and re-acquire guide stars, and then observe the galaxy with NICMOS. For the NICMOS observation, we will use the standard multiaccum mode with the STEP256 sampling and NSAMP=10, and perform the observation at two dither positions to improve CR and bad pixel rejection.
