Abstract The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) offers a deep, resolved stellar population that leverages fundamental parameters (metallicity, dust content) with respect to the Milky Way and to its most studied counterpart, the LMC. Its subsolar metallicity makes it the best analog to the large majority of dwarf irregulars, and gives us the possibility to study star formation and evolution in an enviroment with the closest (available) resemblance to the early universe. Young, compact clusters are ideal laboratories to investigate how these fundamental differences affect star and cluster formation and evolution. We are therefore, proposing, to use ACS and NICMOS to perform a in depth study of the "resolved" stellar population in the four youngest compact clusters in the SMC. The observations, spanning the UV to the near- IR, will reach the subsolar domain, and will address the following fundamental questions: Does the IMF follow the universal Salpeter's law? Is mass segregation prevalent in the SMC clusters as in LMC clusters? Is on-going star formation present, where and how? What is the role of massive star feedback? The four proposed clusters span an age range from 3-20 Myr, and sample spatially different regions of the SMC. The synergy with NICMOS will permit full characterization of existing pre main sequence stars, if detected. This proposal is part of a coordinated HST and ground-based study of the stellar history and star formation processes in the SMC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10248( 6) - 06/17/04 16:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The observations for the four targets have a slightly different strategy. The structure of the visit is the following VISIT 01: NGC 346 2 ACS/WFC orbits VISIT 02: " 2 ASC/WFC orbits VISIT 03: " 1 ACS/WFC + 1 ACS/HRC orbits VISIT 04: " 1 NIC2 orbit + NIC1-NIC3 and ACS/WFC parallel VISIT 05: NGC 602 2 ACS/WFC orbits VISIT 06: " 1 ACS/WFC + 1 ACS/HRC orbits VISIT 07: " 1 NIC2 orbit + NIC1-NIC3 and ACS/WFC parallel VISIT 08: NGC 299 2 ACS/WFC orbits VISIT 09: " 1 ACS/HRC orbit VISIT 10: " 1 NIC2 orbit + NIC1-NIC3 and ACS/WFC parallel VISIT 11: NGC 376 2 ACS/WFC orbits VISIT 12: " 1 ACS/HRC orbit VISIT 13: " 1 NIC2 orbit + NIC1-NIC3 and ACS/WFC parallel The following description is divided by target. In order to facilitate scheduling not more than two orbits are packed in the same visit. However, all the visits on the same target are required to be executed within 10 days from the first visit.------- NGC 346------- VISIT 1 - 1 ORBIT for WFC/F555W- 1 ORBIT for WFC/F814W exposure sequence 1 short - 4 long (dithered) 1 short The aperture is WFC1, but the center of the cluster is moved with POSTARG to position 1024, 0, the center of quadrant B. The dithering pattern is selected to cover the inter-chip gap. VISIT 2 - 1 ORBIT for WFC/F555W- 1 ORBIT for WFC/F814W exposure sequence 1 short - 4 long (dithered) 1 short The aperture is WFC2, but the center of the cluster is moved with POSTARG to position -1024, 0, the center of quadrant D. In this way the mosaic of visit 1 and 2 give a better coverage of the entire cluster and the center of it is exposed a factor 2 longer than the outer regions. The dithering pattern is selected to cover the inter-chip gap. VISIT 3 - 1 ORBIT HRC: F220W, F330W- 1 ORBIT WFC: F555W, F814W, F658N HRC sequence: Position 1: F330W: 1 short - 3 long (dithered) - 1 short F220W: 1 short - 3 long (dithered) - 1 short Position 2: selected with a POSTARG this allow a minimosaic and the coverage of the Fastie Finger. The PosTarg is large, so there are warnings, they should be ignored. F330W: 1 short - 3 long (dithered) - 1 short F220W: 1 short - 3 long (dithered) - 1 short WFC sequence centered in the cluster, aperture WFC 1 long F555W 1 long F814W 3 long F658N (dithered to cover the gap) the two broad band images do not need cr-split because their FOV is already covered in VISIT 01 and 02, all the images will be combined together. VISIT 4 PRIMARY NIC2 F110W- F160W sequence: 4 pointing for dithering, scheduled as postarg to allow a change of filter in the ACS parallel exposures.
