Abstract We propose to use the unique resolving capabilities of STIS to conduct a pilot study of the internal kinematics, structure, and star formation properties of five spiral galaxies at redshifts z ~ 1. Our aim is to determine if these large, rapidly rotating disks have bulges in place at this epoch, and hence can be viewed as direct precursors to their local counterparts. The resolution of ground-based telescopes is insufficient to resolve velocity profiles across these galaxies on the small physical scales necessary to explore the strength of the bulge component and the level of mass-concentration in the potential core. STIS thus provides a unique opportunity to study the detailed kinematics of distant galaxies, and to probe evolution in the shape of the mass distribution. We have selected targets from a high redshift sample containing 100+ Keck+LRIS major-axis, optical rotation curves for which the [OII]3727A optical emission line has high S/N across the disk. STIS spectroscopy will be combined with existing LRIS spectroscopy and WFPC2, NICMOS and ground-based photometry to derive fundamental structural parameters (rotation velocity profile, stellar mass, mass concentration, disk scale length), luminosities and star formation rates, and compare them with local counterparts. This will provide a stringent test of current scenarios for the formation of galactic disks and bulges. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10249( 16) - 07/22/04 15:23 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The sample consists of five high redshift (0.9 < z < 1.0) spiral galaxies located in the CVZ which extend down to a limiting magnitude of I = 23.3 (Imed ~ 22.5). We have used the STIS time exposure calculator and S/N measurements from our existing Keck+LRIS [OII]3727A rotation curves to calculate a total exposure time of 7 hours per target. Note that it is the line strength of the [OII] flux rather then the broad-band magnitudes which will determine the S/N level of the STIS [OII] line observations, and it is not uncommon for fairly faint spiral galaxies to have extremely strong, concentrated flux in the [OII] and Halpha emission lines. We can achieve a medium resolution spectrum (using grating G750M, with 0.56A per pixel dispersion, and the 0.2 arcsecond slit, for a reasonable compromise between resolution and throughput) with S/N > 10 per pixel across the galaxy disk in 14 x 2, 220 = 31, 080 second exposures, i.e. two per orbit. This is sufficient to ensure background-limited observations using multiple detector reads. We will thus spend a total of 35 hours, including the overhead of setup (guide star acquisition, precise alignment) and readout. The 5-contiguous-orbit limit enables us to observe each galaxy within one visit, with a single target acquisition sequence. We note that three of the targets lie closely grouped in a two arc-minute block on the sky (the other two targets are separated from this location by eight and 36 arc-minutes respectively). It is necessary to align the length of the slit upon or near to the major axis of each galaxy. We have determined position angles on the sky for all targets from our existing deep I814 images, and will employ them as we do when taking spectra of these targets with Keck+LRIS. The random distribution of these position angle on the sky, coupled with the galaxy positions in the CVZ, will allow us flexibility in scheduling (e.g. for an arbitrary window in time we can select the target with a position angle which best matches the telescope orientation requirements).
