Abstract A survey of SMC planetary nebulae (PNe) is proposed to study the co-evolution of the nebulae and their central stars, in an environment that is chemically very metal poor. We will obtain STIS imaging and medium-resolution slitless spectroscopy which will yield line fluxes and nebular morphologies in important emission lines, plus magnitudes of the central stars. From these data we will gather a harvest of information: the nebular size, morphology, ionization structure, density, and mass; and the central star temperature, luminosity, and mass. We will explore the correlation found in the Galaxy of nebular bipolarity with large progenitor star mass and with chemical enrichment of the outer envelope during the prior AGB phase. These relationships between PN and central star evolution will be pursued in the SMC with a sample free of distance uncertainties and selection biases, and in a metal- poor chemical environment that stands in sharp contrast to the Galaxy and the LMC. The importance of this program is two-fold: We will determine the late evolutionary paths of the most common stars in a galaxy that, in its chemical content, mimics a young galaxy; and we will produce a sample of extragalactic PN images and spectra that will far exceed in number the galactic PNe already observed with HST, providing an homogeneous database for testing the evolutionary implications of metallicity variations in stellar evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10251( 4) - 06/17/04 19:07 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We aim to obtain images of 53 SMC--PNe in a SNAPSHOT program. The targets list includes all known SMC PNe with accurate coordinates (Sanduleak Etal 1978, see Meyssonnier & Azzoppardi's 1993 H-Alpha survey for accurate coordinates; Morgan 1995; Jacoby 1980). We will use STIS in slitless mode with the G430M and (usually) G750M gratings to obtain monochromatic images of the sample nebulae in several important emission lines. We will also obtain direct images with the clear (50CCD) aperture which will yield central star magnitudes as faint as V=25 with a S/N >= 10 in a 5 min exposure. The stellar fluxes will give the stellar luminosities and, together with the H-beta (or H-Alpha) fluxes, will provide a measure of (or a lower limit to) the stellar temperatures. The typical size of SMC--PNe is ~0.5", though the faintest PNe are often larger than 1.5". The STIS CCD plate scale of 0.051"/pixel will yield a physical resolution of ~0.025 pc, which is comparable to ground-based images of Galactic PNe. The G750M spectrum centered at 6581 Ang will include emission from H-alpha 6563 Ang and [N II] 6548+83 Ang. For nebulae with relatively high surface brightness, the exposures will also show images of [S II] 6717+31 Ang, and He I 6678 Ang. For low-ionization nebulae, we may also see images with a suitable S/N ratio in [O I] 6300+63 Ang. Together, these lines cover the low-ionization morphological features. The [S II] lines, when present, will allow us to determine the nebular density if it is below ~5*10^4 cm^-3. The mean dispersion for this grating is 0.56 Ang/pixel, and the plate scale is 0.051"/pixel, so that no overlap of the images will occur in the [S II] lines, nor between [N II] 6548 Ang and H-alpha, for nebulae less than ~1.4" in diameter. The G430M grating at 4961 Ang will include emission from H-beta 4861 Ang and [O III] 4959, 5007 Ang. These lines give us the morphology at intermediate ionization. We will also be able to determine the interstellar reddening (and detect any extinction originating within the nebulae) from the ratio of the H-alpha and H- beta images. The mean dispersion of 0.28 Ang/pixel means that we may resolve the velocity structure of some of the nebulae, however this will not impede our ability to assign a morphological classification. We require a mean S/N ratio of ~10 per pixel to assign a reliable morphological classification. For a typical nebula of 0.5" in diameter, and a brightness distribution that is roughly uniform, we can observe targets with emission line fluxes as faint as 1.0 x 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the relevant lines in a 20 min exposure. Since the snapshot length ranges from 20 to about 30 minutes, we can easily acquire the proposed data for most of our targets with both gratings (plus the 120 s direct image) within a single visibility period. For especially faint targets, such as those expected from the Jacoby & DeMarco (2002) survey, a similar excellent data quality can be achieved by limiting our observations to the direct image and the G430M grating. In these cases, we will sacrifice the supplemental information from the G750M grating, but still obtain an accurate morphology in H-beta and [O III].
