Abstract Existing STIS observations of quiescent Galactic black hole and neutron star binaries suggest a striking difference between them. The spectra of black holes appear to drop off steeply in the near-UV, whereas those of neutron stars continue to rise, at least down to 1700A. This difference has been interpreted in terms of advective accretion models, and may indicate a fundamental signature of the two types of object. The existing data do not include enough objects to form a representative sample, however. We will exploit the faint source sensitivity of ACS to perform a survey of the UV spectral shapes across a larger sample containing both black holes and neutron stars. This survey will test the assertion that their UV spectra are strikingly different; allow modelling of the broad band spectral energy distribution; test for variability in the UV flux; and identify suitable targets for subsequent spectroscopic follow-up.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10253( 10) - 10/05/04 11:07 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The optimal waveband for observing our targets is the near-UV, as the optical is dominated by the late-type companion stars, and the far-UV is expected to be very weak, and reddened. Within this range the best faint source sensitivity is attainable with ACS/HRC. Imaging will greatly reduce the impact of instrumental dark current and readout noise on our data. We plan to observe each object with the broadband F220W, F250W, and F330W filters. We do attempt far-UV observations of the least reddened neutron star in our sample, LZ Aqr, however, to test the short-wavelength extent of the neutron star spectra. As our targets are variable, we will make a single (line-dithered) exposure with each of the F250W and F220W filters during each orbit, with additional dithered exposures at the beginning and end of each orbit with the F330W. Interpolation of the F330W fluxes will allow definition of a color from each shorter wavelength observation even if there is some variability. Multiple shorter exposures would significantly reduce the efficiency, due to the filter change and readout overheads. Overheads and visibilities are based on those provided by APT Phase II with the default SCHED setting. We divide up the available science time in each orbit in proportion to the amount of time to be spent per filter (see below), and then budget as many orbits (2 or 3) as needed to achieve the desired signal-to-noise ratio on each target. For our SBC observation of LZ Aqr, we do not interleave this with longer wavelength observations to avoid large overheads in switching between SBC and HRC. We therefore place a whole SBC orbit between the two other HRC orbits. Comparison between these two will allow an estimate of long wavelength and/or slow variability, while multiple SBC observations will allow estimate of far-UV variability on shorter timescales. The spectral differences we expect are large, and would not be masked by modest levels of variability. Large amplitude variability would be identified by our repeated observations. To estimate count rates, and hence exposure times, we constructed a simple spectral model for each component (i.e. the accretion flow and companion star) of each system, based on data published in the literature. The flux level is set by quiescent V or R magnitudes together with the estimated relative contributions of the disc and companion star (measured from the veiling of stellar photospheric absorption lines). The shape of the companion star's spectrum is obtained from a suitably reddened model atmosphere spectrum matching the star's spectral type. For the accretion flow spectra, we assume that all the black holes have a spectral shape like A0620-00, and all neutron stars match the shape of Cen X-4, apart from reddening differences. We are primarily interested in the spectral shape, and differences in this between sources. The major source of uncertainty is interstellar reddening, which will be maximized at short wavelengths, where the count rate is minimized (particularly for the black hole sources with their steep spectra). We therefore use the F330W measurement as a reference point, and consider the other values relative to this, aiming for a lower signal-to- noise ratio at short wavelengths. For each source we have reviewed available reddening determinations and estimated not only a best guess value, but a realistic error, taking into account intrinsic scatter in the calibration relations used, and the range of values represented by independent estimates. Note that for XRN Mus 1991 and GRO J0422+32, IUE and HST data are available, so the strength of the 2175A feature has been used to measure reddening. These reddenings will probably be used to analyze our proposed observations, unless new estimates are subsequently published. We then redden trial spectra (using 10253( 10) - 10/05/04 11:07 - [ 3] the Fitzpatrick 1999 extinction curve) with a range of values representative of the error and look at the variation in the F220W and F250W integrated count rate relative to F330W. We typically find that the reddening uncertainty introduces 15-30% errors in the F220W/F330W ratio (largely due to the 2175A absorption feature), and 5-10% errors in the F250W/F330W ratio. In contrast, these ratios differ by a factor of two (F250W/F330W) or three (F220W/F330W) between A0620-00 and Cen X-4, so the effect we are looking for should not be masked by reddening uncertainties. We use these values as our target accuracies for each wavelength and use the ETC to estimate the exposure time needed to achieve the requisite signal-to-noise ratio. Providing our observations achieve this accuracy, our interpretation will be limited by the reddening uncertainties, not by the data quality. Of course our spectral models are very simplistic and the true UV spectra may vary. We therefore increase the budgeted exposure times somewhat to allow for a source being fainter than expected and to ensure we still have adequate signal-to-noise. In most cases this is accommodated automatically in padding orbits. Although the companion star contamination will be very weak below the Balmer jump, some residual emission will exist. Also the F250W, and especially the F220W, suffer from significant red leaks. We have therefore used the ETC with our spectral models to estimate the total count rate within each bandpass from each component of the system, as well as from the backgrounds. We find that i) the companion stars, including red leaks, never contribute more than 6% of the light in the F330W bandpass, or more than 2% at shorter wavelengths; ii) the total background within the 9x9 pixel aperture used by the ETC is never more than twice the total source count; and iii) the sky count rate is always significantly smaller than the dark current, even with the highest background settings. The latter means that we do not have any special requirements for sky brightness. Some of our targets are optically crowded; XRN Vel 1993 has a nearby brighter star 1.6" away. Aql X-1 is only 0.5" from its nearest neighbor. Neither of these are close enough to be a problem for HST, however. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- We have specified observations of LZ Aqr with the SBC/140LP mode. We have checked both the GSC2 and USNO-B1.0 catalogs and find no stars within the field of view above the bright object limits; this is a high latitude field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10253( 10) - 10/05/04 11:07 - [ 4] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 GU-MUS STAR, X-RAY TRANSIENT, RA=11H26M26.6400S +/- 0.04", J2000 V = 20.6+/-0.4 X-RAY NOVAE, LMXB, DEC=-68D40'32.54" +/- 0.17" B-V=1.6 INTERACTING BINARY, E(B-V)=0.3 ACCRETION DISK Coordinate Source: Other_Source: Della Valle et al., 1991, ApJ, 247, L33 2 MM-VEL STAR, ACCRETION DISK, RA=10H13M36.3000S +/- 1", DEC=- J2000 V = 21.7+/-0.5 INTERACTING BINARY, 45D04'32.40" +/- 1" V-R=1.1 LMXB, X-RAY TRANSIENT, E(B-V)=0.2 X-RAY NOVAE Coordinate Source: Other_Source: Bailyn & Orosz 1995, 440, L73 3 V518PER STAR, ACCRETION DISK, RA=04H21M42.7700S +/- 1", J2000 V = 22.2+/-0.5 INTERACTING BINARY, DEC=+32D54'26.60" +/- 1" B-V=1.2 LMXB, X-RAY TRANSIENT, E(B-V)=0.35 X-RAY NOVAE Coordinate Source: Other_Source: McCrosky et al. 1992, IAU Circ. 5597 4 V1333AQL STAR, ACCRETION DISK, RA=19H11M16.0000S +/- 2", J2000 V = 21.6+/-0.5 INTERACTING BINARY, DEC=+00D35'6.30" +/- 2" V-I=2.2 LMXB, X-RAY TRANSIENT, E(B-V)=0.5 X-RAY NOVAE Coordinate Source: Other_Source: Thorstensen et al. 1978, ApJ, 220, L131 Comments: This target undergoes more frequent outbursts than the others selected.
