Abstract We propose an ACS Snapshot imaging survey to resolve a well-defined sample of highly probable white dwarf plus red dwarf close binaries. These candidates were selected from a search for white dwarfs with infrared excess from the 2MASS database. They represent unresolved systems (separations less than approximately 2" in the 2MASS images) and are distributed over the whole sky. Our HST+ACS observations will be sensitive to a separation range (1-20 AU) never before probed by any means. The proposed study will be the first empirical test of binary star parameters in the post-AGB phase, and cannot be accomplished from the ground. By resolving as few as 20 of our ~100 targets with HST, we will be able to characterize the distribution of orbital semi-major axes and secondary star masses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10255( 4) - 01/28/05 09:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will use the ACS HRC with the F814W filter to obtain the highest spatial resolution possible while remaining near the crossover in spectral energy distribution between white dwarfs (WDs) and red dwarfs (RDs). In order to remove cosmic rays, hot pixels and detector blemishes, minimize flat-fielding errors, and, most importantly, oversample the PSF, we will utilize the standard ACS-HRC-DITHER-BOX 4-point pattern. To be certain that we image deeply enough to detect both stellar components in the binary, we have estimated the likely I-band brightnesses of the WDs and RDs in each system (using available 2MASS and optical color information). We then used the ACS ETC to obtain total- and sub-exposure times required to obtain S/N of at least 50 for the fainter of the stellar components after combining 4 sub-exposures. This minimum S/N can be obtained in a total visit duration (including overheads) of approximately 30 minutes for our faintest target goal, I=22. Thus, all of our visits are 30 minutes or less in duration. The total duration of a visit is dominated by overheads for all but the faintest targets (I>20), so we rounded up the sub- exposure times to the larger of 10 seconds or the ETC-determined time (while staying well below the sub-exposure saturation limits for the few very bright targets). This allows us to maximize the S/N obtained per visit while maintaining total visit durations of 30 minutes or less. Generally, the spectral energy distribution of a typical cool WD allows for a shorter ACS-HRC exposure than an M dwarf of the same I-band brightness to achieve the same S/N. Thus, in cases where the WD is expected to be fainter than the RD, we have verified that the selected exposure time is long enough to achieve the desired S/N on the RD also. Maximum sub-exposure length is 270 seconds, which should yield, on average, less than one pixel affected by cosmic rays per sub- exposure. All observations use ACCUM mode and gain=2.
