Abstract We propose to observe the central regions of the globular cluster NGC 6397 with ACS/WFC once per month for the 10 months of its visibility in Cycle 13. The project has three main goals: (1) Measure internal motions for roughly 3000 stars within 150 arcseconds of the cluster center, using archival WFPC2 as a first epoch. The motion of the typical star will be measured to 10-20%. We will detect any central black hole (BH) with a mass greater than 1000 solar masses, and will also measure core- collapse signatures such as anisotropy. (2) Conduct the first-ever search for heavy binaries by looking for the astrometric "wobble" of the luminous secondary. We should find all heavy binaries in the field with separations between 1 and 5 AU and periods between 3 months and 5 years. (3) Search for opticall counterparts to X-ray sources found by Chandra. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10257( 2) - 05/17/04 12:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe the central regions of globular cluster NGC6397 10x over the course of a year. Each visit will consist of 6 exposures. One short exposure (10s in F625W or 13s in F435W), which has the goal of measuring the blue stragglers and turnoff stars. The second exposure (in the same filter) will measure the lower main sequence. Our 10 visits will give us 5 short and 5 deep exposures through each of B and R at various orientations. The last four exposures of each visit will be maximally deep F658N, so that we can do a deep search for H-alpha counterparts. These last exposures are 390s or so and will saturate just above the turnoff, so that we will have the maximum number of well measured stars. In each visit, we'll take 5 different pointings, so that a given star will fall in the gap no more than once. We constrained the timing of the visits so that they are reasonably well distributed over the cycle. We ended up with 5 in the first 4 months and 5 in the last 4 months. These many visits should allow us to measure any nonlinearities in the stellar motions. The target is specified by WFCENTER. The targ coord corresponds to the qLMXB in Grindlay 2001. The pos-targ pattern is designed such that this star never falls in the inter-chip gap. The hope is to get the best possible photometry for this star. The cluster center is 30" away, so that it will fall somewhere on the two chips for any random orientation. This means 8s for R and 12s for B. The next image will be through the same wide filter (F625W and F435W) and will be 340s, just long enough to be efficient. This will then be followed by 4x F658N observations of maximal length (either 390s or 395s). The first two observations are taken at the same pos- targ (-8,+8) the next 4 are taken offset by (-4,+4), (0, 0), (4.5,-4.5), (8,-8) arcseconds, so that any given star will only fall on the gap in one of the deep images. The pattern of POS-TARGS is designed so that the point at WFCENTER (2048, 2028) in bottom chip never lands in the gap. The qLMXB will be there. The diagonal POS-TARGS will make the total FOV observed each orbit more square (as it's in the direction of minimum diagonal for the WFC FOV).
