Abstract The final phase of the evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, the planetary nebula (PN) ejection, is thought to largely contribute to the carbon and nitrogen enrichment in galaxies, in particular in old stellar populations. Stellar generations forming from a carbon- and nitrogen-enriched medium are a necessary condition for planetary and life formation. It is essential to understand how stars go through the process of shedding their chemically-enriched shells, and to test the predictions of stellar evolution theory on the relationship between stellar mass and elemental enrichment. Magellanic Cloud PNs are ideal probes for this study. Their abundances can be directly related to the mass of the central stars and to that of the stellar progenitor, without the great (distance and reddening) uncertainties that affect Galactic PNs. The UV lines are essential for calculating the abundances of the element related to stellar evolution (C, N, O) and to progenitor populations (e.g., Ne). We propose to acquire STIS UV spectroscopy of the SMC PNs whose morphology and central star properties has been previously determined by us with HST. We will derive the (C, N, O) abundance-to-mass relation, and determine the extent to which the mass of the progenitors of asymmetric PNs exceed that of symmetric PNs. We will also test the PN luminosity function, and probe cosmic recycling, in a very low-metallicity environment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10259( 19) - 04/04/05 09:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The following paragraph describe the STIS observing plan. Please refer to "approved change of instrument" for the new observing description. We have completed a Cycle 9 snapshot program (ID: 8663) of SMC PNs optical imaging/slitless spectroscopy (Stanghellini et al. 2003). This survey provides the accurate positions and optical line fluxes necessary to craft the proposed UV program. The exposures in G230L are designed to give us a ~1000 counts in C III] 1909 (summed over the area of the nebula), assuming an unreddened flux that is twice that of Hbeta. For bright nebulae the exposures will be significantly deeper, allowing the fainter lines (e.g., C II) to be detected. The exposures in G140L will be of the same duration, which will allow us to detect the C IV 1550 line, or (for lower ionization nebulae) to set a useful upper limit. We will acquire the NUV and FUV low dispersion spectra with a large slit (e.g., 2 arcsec), as to collect and measure all the nebular light. For objects with the highest surface brightness, this will also permit us to contrast the nebular morphology in bright lines such as C III with those in the optical ([O III] 5007 and Halpha). We give the log Hbeta, and log [O III] fluxes , V magnitudes of the central star and nebular diameters.
