Abstract The extreme RSG and powerful OH/IR source VY CMa is surrounded by an asymmetric reflection nebula dominated by a prominent nebulous arc, bright filamentary arcs, and several clumps of dusty knots that are evidence for multiple and asymmetric mass loss events. Our groundbased velocities show that these structures are kinematically distinct from the gneral flow of the diffuse gas and may be directional. We have speculated that these arcs and knots may be caused by localized activity on the star involving convection and possibly magnetic fields analogous to lower mass stars. If correct this would have important implications for the causes of high mass loss events in evolved massive stars. Fortunately, VY CMa provides us with an opportunity to learn more about its possible mass loss mechanisms and history from the morphology of its ejecta. We propose to use polarimetry and second epoch images combined with our radial velocities to map the morphology of the nebula and the discrete structures embedded in it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10262( 3) - 02/11/05 09:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ 1.Polarimetry with ACS/HRC -- Although VY CMa is relatively bright (integrated V = 8.5), imaging polarimetry requires three separate exposures with the three visual polarizers (POL0V, POL60V, POL120V), each with only 50% transmission, compared to only one exposure for standard imaging. The polarization images will be obtained in two colors with the F550M (visual) and F658N (red) filters for the color information. These filters were chosen because they are the closest available with the polarizers to those used for the WFPC2 imaging. We will use a range of exposure times with each filter, from short (1.0 sec) to allow us to work close to the star (which will saturate at longer exposures) up to 30 sec (times two with CR split) to properly expose the fainter nebulosity further than 1arcsec from the star. With guide star acquisition plus overhead these exposures will fill one orbit. Instrumental polarization in the focal plane of the HRC has been measured for several filter combinations, but none that match our needs. We will therefore require a second orbit to observe a nearby star (there are several V=11-12 stars within 4 arcmin of VY CMa) to determine instrumental polarization. This orbit would involve a short integration (8 sec yields S/N > 500 for V = 11 in F550M with the visual polarizer at three positions on the chip in both filters with the three polarizers. More than one position in the focal plane is necessary to determine if the instrumental polarization significantly varies across the focal plane. We will also accurately measure the polarization of the calibration star from the ground with our CCD Polarimeter at Mt. Lemmon Observing Facility. We will, of course, still be using the instrumental polarization data available from STScI to compare with our results and to check for consistency with wavelength and position in the focal plane. These calibrating or reference observations will then be availabe to future users via the archive. 2. Imaging with the Planetary Camera chip on the WFPC2 using the continuum filters F410M, F547M, F1042M, and the narrow line H$\alpha$ filter F656N. We will repeat the multiple integration times used previously to detect the faint nebulosity and to avoid saturation from the bright central source. Different features in the nebula are seen best in the different filters. For example, the embedded star is nearly resolved in the F1042 image while the knots nearest the star are viewed best with the F410M filter. These observations take one orbit including overhead. These images are being repeated to measure the angular expansion of the nebula and any transverse motions of the embedded structures. They will also be used to provide the photometric colors for the polarimetry analysis. We are using the WFPC2 instead of the higher resolution ACS/HRC for astrometric and photometric consistency with our previous observations.
