Abstract During the past few years, robotic (or nearly robotic) searches for supernovae (SNe), most notably our Lick Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS), have found hundreds of SNe, many of them in quite nearby galaxies (cz < 4000 km/s). Most of the objects were discovered before maximum brightness, and have follow-up photometry and spectroscopy; they include some of the best-studied SNe to date. We propose to conduct a snapshot imaging survey of the sites of some of these nearby objects, to obtain late-time photometry that (through the shape of the light and color curves) will help reveal the origin of their lingering energy. The images will also provide high-resolution information on the local environment of SNe that are far superior to what we can procure from the ground. For example, we will obtain color-color and color-magnitude diagrams of stars in these SN sites, to determine their progenitor masses and constraints on the reddening. Recovery of the SNe in the new HST images will also allow us to actually pinpoint their progenitor stars in cases where pre- explosion images exist in the HST archive. Use of ACS rather than WFPC2 will make our snapshot survey even more valuable than our Cycle 9 survey. This Proposal is complementary to our Cycle 13 archival proposal, in which we outline a plan for using existing HST images to glean information about SN environments. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10272( 9) - 05/17/05 10:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We wish to obtain ACS/HRC snapshot images of the sites of nearby, recent SNe discovered or monitored by LOSS. Most of the objects are core-collapse SNe, which have massive short-lived progenitors (making it also possible to study individual stars in their local environment), but a few important SNe Ia (e.g., SN 2002du) will also be imaged to obtain late-time measurements in crowded environments. The use of standard wide bands will permit direct comparisons with other HST observations. Although there are painful tradeoffs, we feel that ACS/HRC is superior to ACS/WFC for our purposes: the overheads with the HRC are much lower than those with the WFC, allowing us to obtain images with 2 filters (instead of 1) in a given visit, and thus giving us the color of the SN. Also, the immediate environment of the SN will be resolved better. Given the constraints of snapshot observations (less than 1 orbit per target), the desire to go fairly deep, and the advantage of having some color information for SNe (and their environments), the use of 4 filters (BVRI = F435W, F555W, F625W, F814W) is deemed optimal. [We used only 2 filters in Cycle 9 (GO-8602), but this did not allow us to set strong constraints on the reddening in the local SN environment.] U-band observations would be prohibitively time-consuming. For a single visit to be about 34 minutes long (the peak of the distribution of snapshot visits has historically been around 30--35 minutes, according to the HST Snapshot document at http://www.stsci.edu/hst/HST_overview/documents/), there can be only one filter change and only one CR-SPLIT pair of WFC exposures through each filter. Each pair of exposures averages 10 min in length, but the results will be superior to those of longer exposures with the WFPC2. Using the ACS/HRC exposure estimator, we find that for a V=24 mag B5 star with a 10-min CR-SPLIT exposure in each band, we can achieve a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 18 (B), 16 (V), 14 (R), 9 (I). For a V=24 mag K0 star the corresponding numbers are S/N = 7 (B), 15 (V), 20 (R), 20 (I). Since we expect a mixture of star colors (old SNe tend to be red, but their associated stellar populations can be blue), we want to get a good balance of exposures times, so that B and I are not substantially worse than V and R. Thus, we will obtain BR exposures in one visit (with 70% of the exposure time going to B), and VI exposures in another visit (with 60% of the exposure time going to I). If a given galaxy is visited only once, we will still be able to derive useful constraints on the stellar population with V vs. V-I or with B vs. B-R, as shown by Van Dyk et al. (1999a), although having all 4 bands would obviously be better, especially for estimating the reddening. Moreover, obtaining even a single color for a SN (B-R or V-I) is superior to acquiring only single-filter observations. The S/N calculated above will allow us to get good late-time points on the light curves of many of our SNe during Cycle 13, given their current decline rates (as measured by us with KAIT). Moreover, for the studies of the environments, our typical distance moduli are about 31 mag, so V = 24 leads to M_V = -7 mag and we will be able to set useful constraints on the stellar populations. For closer galaxies, with mu = 29-30 mag, we reach M_V = -5 to -6 mag, corresponding to the top of the main sequence and bright supergiants (stars probably similar to a SN's core-collapse progenitor). With multiple visits to some objects, we will be able to probe even deeper. We choose 20-27 of the recent nearby SNe as the targets of our current snapshot study. We concentrate on the most recent ones (which have the highest probability of being detected in the HST images), as well as on long-lived SNe (as judged from their continuously-updated KAIT light curves). We also emphasize core-collapse SNe 10272( 9) - 05/17/05 10:29 - [ 3] for which pre-explosion HST archival images are available, in order to maximize our chances of directly identifying the progenitor star once we know the precise location of the SN (from our new images). More SNe will be discovered before the Phase II deadline, and we will select the best objects to observe; the merits of all eligible SNe will be compared in detail. The Phase I deadline greatly helps our program, because most of the proposed SNe will still be bright enough to detect in the HST images when the Cycle begins. We want an average of 3 visits per object (2 visits for a majority of objects, but up to 5 visits for the most important ones), our total request is 75 visits at about 34 minutes per visit).
