Abstract We will obtain deep NICMOS observations of a recently discovered population of intergalactic globular clusters in the nearby galaxy cluster Abell 1185. These H band observations in conjunction with deep V and I images that we obtained with ACS in Cycle 11 will allow us to measure the ages and metallicities of these objects from their optical and near-infrared colors, which will provide important insights to their origin. We will also obtain parallel observations with both ACS and WFPC2. ACS parallel observations will be used to obtain deep images to search for intergalactic globular clusters in a different region of Abell 1185. WFPC2 parallel observations will be used to obtain images of interacting galaxy pair Arp 105, to search for globular clusters currently being ejected into intergalactic space as a result of this encounter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10277( 4) - 05/17/04 12:05 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ There are 3 components to our observing program. Our primary observations are with NICMOS (NIC3) to obtain deep H (F160W) images of intergalactic globular clusters in two fields in the rich galaxy cluster Abell 1185 that we previously imaged with ACS. In addition, we will be doing parallel imaging observations with ACS and WFPC2. With suitable telescope orientation we will place WFPC2 over the interacting galaxy pair Arp 105 to look for globular clusters currently being torn off of these galaxes and ejected into intergalactic space. ACS wil be pointed at another "blank" field in Abell 1185 to look for intergalactic globular clusters in a different region of A1185 from our primary NICMOS (and Cycle 11 ACS) fields. For the WFPC2 parallel observations we will use the F606W and F814W filters. For the ACS parallel observations we will use the F555W and F814W filters to match our previous Cycle 11 ACS observations of a different field in Abell 1185. Our two primary NICMOS fields will be observed for 7 orbits each. Rather than dithering during each orbit, we have opted to simply dither between orbits using the POS TARG special requirement (we specified this for the Primary exposure of each orbit and assumed that the coordinated parallels during that orbit automatically share the same POS TARG). We split the 7 orbits into two Visits (4 orbits + 3 orbits). For the 4 orbit Visits we do a simple four-step box dither step with 2 arcsec steps (10 pixels). For the 3 orbit Visits we do the first 3 steps of a box pattern with 1 arcsec steps. Orientation constraints are tight for this program because we need to get our parallel WFPC2 fields to fall on Arp 105, the itneracting galaxy pair that we wish to image. Visits 1 and 2 use the same ORIENT when we observe our NICMOS target #1, and then when we move to NICMOS target #2 for Visits 3 and 4 they share the same ORIENT, which differs by a few degrees from the ORIENT during Visits 1 and 2 to ensure maximum overlap of all fields (we will be using F606W with WFPC2 and F555W with ACS during Visits 1 and 2, and F814W for both instruments during Visits 3 and 4 to get color information on objects in our parallel fields, whis is why it is important that the fields overlap). We are using MULTIACCUM with SPARS256 for the NICMOS observations. Please note that this shows the our first orbit in each visit exceeds the observability by 1 second, but after consultation with our PC it was concluded that this is allowable.
