Abstract We propose to measure the proper motions in the X-ray source associtasted with the HH 154 jet.This is the only known protostellar jet, where the X-ray enmission can be studied in detail. Our numericval simulations show that the X-ray source is produced in a fast-moving post-shock region (500 km/s), and earlier HST observations (1996, 1998) together with ground based spectra identifythe potential region from which the X-rays should emanate. Detection (or lack of) the X-rays with Chandra, and the associated optical region with HST will either strongly confirm (or falsify) our model. This will constitute the basis for a general theory for the formation of X- rays in protostellar jets. Understanding and modellling the emission mechanism of X- rays is key to estimate the lifetime and evolution of the X-ray jets and understand their influence on the star (and planetary-) formation process in general. Associating the right optical material (HST) with the X-ray source (Chandra) provides both proper motions (and true speeds), as well as (by observing in H-alpha and [SII]) determining the (post-) shock properties in the recombination region. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10351( 2) - 09/20/04 08:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain two images in each of H-alpha (F656N) and [SII] (F673N). One orbit will be dedicated to each of the two filters. Both absolute astrometry (to 0.1 arcsec) and relative astrometry of knots in the jet is the objective. Therefore, the orientation must be such that the star registered in our previous observations of this object with HST (6127 and 6411) is again found within the field of view Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- This project is a joint Chandra proposal. It is also building on two previous HST programs #6127 and #6411 (published), and need to be carried out in a way so that the data can be compared with the previous data set (time evolution of protostellar jet). For this reason, a parameters are given with the same set up as the old proposals in order to facilitate astrometry ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10351( 2) - 09/20/04 08:52 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 L1551IRS5 ISM, HERBIG-HARO RA=04H31M34.1300S +/- 0.02S, J2000 F-line(6563)=3.3E-14 OBJECT, JET, BIPOLAR DEC=+18D08'5.20" +/- 0.7" OUTFLOW, SHOCK FRONT Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE Comments: Same coordinates, and if possible same guide stars as proposals #6127 and #6411 We have no hard requirement on the two filter-images being obtained in two separate visits, but should not be separated by more than 6 weeks. 10351( 2) - 09/20/04 08:52 - [ 4] Visit: 01 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: PCS MODE FINE;
