Abstract We will measure the changing flow speeds, magnetic fields, and energy fluxes in well-resolved quasar jets found in our short-exposure Chandra survey by combining new, deep Chandra data with radio and optical imaging. We will image each jet with sufficient sensitivity to estimate beaming factors and magnetic fields in several distinct regions, and so map the variations in these parameters down the jets. HST observations will help diagnose the role of synchrotron emission in the overall SED, and may reveal condensations on scales less than 0.1 arcsec. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10352( 3) - 11/05/04 10:19 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain deep HST imaging. There is no coordination requirement, as the jets are too large to vary within one year. HST data would compliment our proposed Chandra observations, both by providing jet knot fluxes at intermediate frequencies for our SEDs, and by providing morphological information at sub-arcsec scales. Only HST can obtain <0.1" resolution imaging in the optical. This will be critically important to constrain the overall morphology of these jets. For 1030-357, this will help us track the two bends in the jet, and discover whether they are gradual, or two sharp bends. The former case could be a stable helical structure, the latter might imply interaction with external objects causing discrete bending. If the widths of some individual jet knots are resolved by HST, then the sizes of the emitting regions can be measured, the emitting volume can be estimated, the necessary particle and magnetic field energy densities can be derived, and thus equipartition can be tested. HST may even resolve structural stratification across the jet. The extremely low background and high resolution of HST makes possible exquisite sensitivity, particularly for compact sources such as these knots. This was demonstrated in the HDF observations and also in the WFPC2 observations of PKS0637-752, where in 3 orbits three 27th magnitude knots were found. We propose considerably deeper observations of these objects using ACS, which has approximately 4 times the sensitivity of WFPC2. We wish to observe each target with ACS/WFC in two filters, using F475W (SDSS g') and F814W (I) for an orbit each. In both bands, these observations will reach roughly 28th magnitude at 4 sigma significance. This will allow even an upper limit to exclude an extension of the radio synchrotron spectrum. The need for this level of sensitivity is well illustrated by PKS 0637-752, which is considerably brighter than some of our targets. The optical spectral index so measured will help us discriminate between SXE and IC-CMB models. Predicting the jet IR flux by extrapolating the radio measurements, we find predict a detection with S/N ~ 4-5 with just one orbit. Even a non-detection would provide a tight constraint for synchrotron models. We will dither the observations to eliminate image defects. We will obtain short exposures in each filter to allow us to obtain optimal PSF subtraction. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Each visit has exposures in both F475W (SDSS g) and F814W (broad I). The lion's share of the exposure time is used for long exposures in these bands, with exposure time split roughly evenly between them. However, we will also obtain short exposures to measure the PSF shape and allow us to measure the positions of jet knots to an accuracy of 0.01" relative to the quasar core.
