Abstract We propose a deep survey for low-luminosity accretion-powered sources (CVs, qLMXBs and wind-fed pulsars) that likely constitute the underlying populations in the cusp of sources around SgrA*. A 100 ksec pointing at l, b = 0.10, -1.43 degr. allows the survey closest to the galactic center that can still be reached in the optical. With 12 orbits of HST, we can complement the two outer fields (Baade's Window and Stanek's Window) obtained with Chandra-HST to complete the most sensitive X- ray/optical survey of the Galactic Bulge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10353( 2) - 09/20/04 10:03 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Twelve orbits have been allocated to observe a region near the galactic center with relatively low extinction (Av~3.9); we request that this region will be observed simultaneously with a 100 ks Chandra pointing centered at the same position. We have designed a 2x2 ACS/WFC mosaic to image the central part of the Chandra FoV. The four corners of the mosaic have a few arcsec of overlap and are specified with the following POS-TARG offsets from our target's position (POS-TARG=(0, 0)) at the center of the mosaic: corner/visit POS-TARG 1 -96.5,-105.5 2 -96.5,+90.5 3 +96.5,+105.5 4 +96.5,-90.5 This pattern worked well for previous observations (GO10009, GO9690); the pattern is non-square to account for the projected shape of the ACS detectors on the sky. In our observational setup, we have divided the twelve orbits in 4 visits of 3 orbits; each visit will be used to image one corner of the mosaic in three filters, using the following sequence: orbit 1: 1 x 167 s (F625W), 4 x 464 s (F658N) orbit 2: 1 x 168 s (F625W), 4 x 492 s (F658N) orbit 3: 1 x 167 s (F625W), 4 x 492 s (F435W) Individual exposures through the same filter are dithered with respect to each other in order to help remove CRs and hot pixels, and to improve the PSF sampling:- The three exposures through F625W have small POS- TARG offsets with respect to each other. The POS-TARG shifts of the first and second observations with respect to the third observation are (+0.116,+0.075) and (+0.231,+0.150), respectively (equivalent of (+2.33,+1.33) and (+4.67,+2.67) pixels).- The four exposures through F435W are arranged in the predefined ACS-WFC-DITHER-BOX pattern.- The eight exposures through F658N are arranged in an 8-point dither pattern (starting at the position of the first R exposure) where the sub-pixel shifts form a 3x3 grid "without" the central position; the shifts are combinations of integer and sub-pixel shifts.
