Abstract We report the unexpected detection of the Fomalhaut debris disk in scattered light during one orbit of observation for our Cycle 12 program GO9862. This is a major discovery because Fomalhaut is now the closest (7.7 pc) and oldest (~200 Myr) debris disk detected in reflected light. We would like to request Director's Discretionary Time to further study the Fomalhaut disk. The goals are to image the disk around its entire perimeter, increase the signal-to-noise of the detection, and to obtain data at a second wavelength. We will perform a high-resolution study of radial and azimuthal disk asymmetries that are thought to arise from perturbations by planet- mass companions, and we will constrain the physical properties of grain material by obtaining the color of the disk. Because our original Cycle 12 program was designed to study point sources in the field, and the ACS/HRC coronagraph is a limited lifetime resource, it is necessary to acquire these additional data via Director's Discretionary Time during Cycle 13. The observational challenge of high contrast cannot be met by other observatories, and these data will complement new Spitzer results on the Fomalhaut disk at mid and far-infared wavelengths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10390( 7) - 09/29/04 11:18 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ These are ACS HRC coronagraphic observations with the 1.8" occulting spot. The targets and observing mode are an extension of GO 9862, PI: Kalas. HD 172167 is the science target and two PSF reference stars are HD 216956 and HD 210418. ABSOLUTE ORIENT constraints are picked for HD 172167 in order to fit the extended nebulosity along the diagonal direction of the HRC CCD. For PSF subtraction, we request that the orbits are not interrupted by calibration observations during Earth occultation. We also request that orbits are scheduled consecutively. SCHEDULABILITY may be modified as needed to accomodate the scheduling of these observations. To ease the scheduling problems, we specify SCHEDULABILITY=100. If we have the ORIENT constraint between 23-24, the target can be scheduled Oct. 8, 2004. Between ORIENT 24-25 gives scheduling Oct. 8-9. ORIENT 25-26 gives scheduling Oct. 8-12. We prefer ORIENT 23-24 if it is schedulable. The program is broken up into two sets of five orbits (Visits 10-15, Visits 20-25) which are the F606W observaions. The third set of two visits (30-31) are the F814 observations.
