Merger events should have continued up to relatively recent times (the last 1-5 Gyr), and many ellipticals and S0 bulges should therefore show evidence of multiple, discrete, intermediate-age populations. Although there is substantial observational support for a dissipational merger origin for some early-type galaxies, most do not exhibit the expected anomalies in either their light profiles or color distributions. However, existing searches (mainly in the V and I bands) have not probed very deeply. Here we propose high resolution, broad-band, near-ultraviolet (2500-3400 A) imaging of the cores of bright early-type galaxies. This is the most sensitive probe available for the detection of spatially-segregated, multiple population components with ages in the range 1-5 Gyr. Our sample consists of dust- and AGN-free systems with both normal and mildly anomalous central light profiles. There is very little existing information on the near-UV structure of early-type galaxies, and our program would effectively explore new terrain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10435( 3) - 09/09/05 10:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe each galaxy with the ACS/High Resolution Camera and the F250W, F330W, and F555W filters. The first two of these are in the near-ultraviolet and provide the ability to identify and separate out intermediate age populations. The F555W (V-band) filter serves as a photometric reference. Although there are existing V-band images taken with WFPC-1 or -2 of all of our sample, these do not have the same high resolution as will our HRC images (0.027 arcsec/pixel). It is important that the V-band images be well matched to the NUV images. The HRC V-band exposures will require relatively little time. We plan to devote two orbits to each object. After overheads, there will be about 2400 sec of available exposure time per orbit for a typical target. One orbit will be used to obtain a ~40-min exposure in F250W; the other will be used for a ~16-min exposure in F330W and a ~7-min exposure in F555W. All exposures will be CR-split. Extensive experience with extraction of stellar population information from broad-band photometry suggests that a minimum S/N of ~30 per spatial resolution element over the region of prime interest is desirable. Based on archival HST data, the mean surface brightness of our sample within the central 1" of each galaxy in the F555W band is ~14.0 mag/arcsec^2. For our planned exposures, the HRC Imaging Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) predicts S/N per pixel for this surface brightness of 47 for F250W, 106 for F330W, and 185 for F555W. These values were calculated for the energy distribution of an old population. These exposures will therefore meet our precision criterion for the centers of the galaxies. The S/N per pixel is lower at larger radii, but azimuthal averaging over a proportionally larger number of pixels returns satisfactory S/N in the surface brightness profiles at radii out to r>10".
