Abstract Recent work has shown that the mass of a black hole is tightly correlated with the bulge mass of its host galaxy. This relation needs to be understood in the context of black hole growth in its active phase. Highly accreting AGNs, like narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), are found to lie below the black hole mass -- bulge velocity dispersion correlation of normal galaxies and broad line AGNs. This result was obtained using FWHM([OIII]) as a surrogate for the bulge velocity dispersion. To test this result we propose to obtain high resolution images of 10 NLS1s that do not lie on the black hole mass--sigma relation and measure accurate bulge parameters (luminosity and effective radius). We will obtain an alternate handle on the bulge velocity dispersion through the fundamental plane relations and also find the locus of these NLS1s on the black hole mass--bulge luminosity plane. Testing this result is crucial to understanding the role of accretion on black hole growth, the observed correlations of the black hole mass with the bulge, and the formation and evolution of galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10436( 2) - 10/25/04 16:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We wish to determine the bulge properties of host galaxies of AGNs. ACS is the imaging instrument of choice for HST because of its high throughput, high resolution and large dynamic range and we will use the HRC as our camera because of its superior resolution. This is helpful not only to model and remove the point source contribution, but also to fit the bulge profiles with more resolution elements. We will use filter F625W, because the contrast between an AGN and its bulge is enhanced in redder bands. Also, the fundamental plane is defined in the ``R'' band, and the SDSS r is the ACS filter closest in wavelength to the R band. That the HRC pixel size critically samples the PSF at 6300 \AA\ works to our advantage. Table 1 details our proposed observations. For each object, we propose two or three sets of exposures. The longer exposure times were designed to maximize the S/N at $r_e$ of the bulge without saturating the point source image. We used the known AGN fluxes to determine these exposure times, and they range from 105 seconds to 810 seconds for our targets. Since modeling the nuclear point source contribution is critically important to our science goals, we also have additional smaller exposures. To be conservative, we allowed for AGN variability by a factor of two and the central pixel was filled only up to about 75\% of the saturation limit. This led to shorter exposure times ranging from 45 seconds for the brightest targets to 540 seconds for the faintest. All exposures were optimized to fit within the HRC buffer limit of 16 images per orbit. Bulge luminosities were estimated by assuming that they lie on the \mbh--L$_{Bulge}$ relation. With the proposed observations we will achieve a typical S/N per pixel of over 20 at 3 kpc from the nucleus. With the two dimensional image, we will be able to model the bulge profile and determine $r_e$, $I_e$ and luminosity accurately with a total S/N at $r_e$ well over $\sim300$. Considering target acquisition, exposure times and overheads, an orbit per target is sufficient to meet the goals of this proposal. Taking into account the uncertainty in the \mbh\ estimates and the scatter in the \mbh--L$_{Bulge}$ relation, we will still achieve a S/N of at least 10 per pixel at $r_e$ (between 0.9 arcseconds to 3.7 arcseconds from the nucleus) for all objects except TON S180. We are aware that the HRC is optimized at optical/UV wavelengths and its throughput in the ``r'' band is not very high. However, it is sufficient to obtain the desirable S/N in the bulge in one orbit for each of our targets. The higher resolution of HRC outweighs its smaller throughput for our science goals. Our flux calculations of the bulge are conservative as the target galaxies may be brighter if they do not lie on the \mbh--L$_{Bulge}$ relation (an assumption that we will test). In that case we will obtain even better S/N from the host galaxy. We plan to obtain ground-based images of our target galaxies to supplement the proposed HRC observations, with deep exposures to detect the outer parts of the galaxies. We will obtain these images with our own facilities at MDM Observatory in Arizona and via our share in the SMARTS consortium at the CTIO 1.3m telescope in Chile. The issue in phase II was whether or not to dither the exposures. For cosmic ray removal, just CR-SPLIT=2 would have been sufficient, which is also a default for HRC. However, all over the ACS handbook, dithering is highly recommended to overcome the hot pixel problem. To avoid large overheads, we decided to do dither with two pointings, which is similar to but better than just CR-SPLIT=2. We have used only the default parameters for the dither. We assume that because this is a simple, allowed dither pattern, data reduction is straightforward. If this is not the case, please let us know. I have no previous experience with imaging observations and would appreciate advice. All that I want to do is to detect a faint and small galaxy under a bright point source. So the only purpose of dithering is better PSF sampling. Again, please advice.
